Looking through The Minotaur I found an interesting topological trick. I am always interested in this sort of thing.

The trick is based on a trick called 'Framed' by Bob Neale and apparently appeared in one of his early lecture notes.

Does anybody know which set of notes this trick appeared in?

I don't know anything about the Bob Neale effect.

But the effect in The Minotaur based on Bob Neale's principle goes like this:

A playing card (a Jack) has a slit down the center (lengthwise) - it goes from near one end to the other. And on this there are three coloured circle stickers. The other side of the card has another three coloured circle stickers. One of which is a different colour to the one at the front.

When the playing card is flicked - the center coloured sticker changes colour. It seems to switch places with the circles (of a different colour) on the other side of the card. I don't really understand exactly what is going on with the trick since I have not made it up yet.

This trick is called 'Jealous Jack' by David Oestreicher. It can be found on page 5 of the June 1994 issue of The Minotaur magazine.

"Framed" is in "More Than Lecture Notes No. 2" (1991). I haven't had time to look closely but it seems to be quite similar to the effect in Minotaur. Robert Neale says his trick is based on one by Paul Hallas in "Mental Mix" and also on "Correcting Fluid" in Fulves' "Self Working Paper Magic". The latter is something I first saw in a little book by Pat Page called "Tricks with Paper", published in the 1970s and also reprinted in "Bell's Book of Magic".

I'd completely forgotten the trick in Minotaur. Thanks for mentioning it - I'll have to try and make one up.

Heh. I remember bookmarking the Minotaur routine when I got it in 94, but I never got round to making it (I got locked out of my flat, and had other things to worry about...)

I'll make one of the Neale version as well, just for comparison

I also have a flat plastic wallet-type Magic Printer thing (Japanese, I think) that uses the same principle as the Pat Page/Karl Fulves tricks to apparently print a blank card.

That sounds cool. Please let me know if you have any other details.

The one I have was sold as a printer. I always thought it would be best used to print business cards.
