Was going to post this in the Collector's Forum, but this isn't my auction so I decided to post it here. Please move this thread if necessary.
Seems legit...I'm almost speechless.

Re: First edition of Erdnase on eBay
Who would have thought they had designer slipcases with the deluxe editions back then?
Re: First edition of Erdnase on eBay
Weren't these going for about 1/3 of the seller's ask just a few years ago?
Also interesting: One anonymous bidder with no feedback history.

That's a nice clamshell box he had made for it, and there's already a bid at $6,500.

Yeah, prices have moved up significantly in the last decade.
This copy was offered on a dedicated website a couple of months ago for $9000.

You got that right Bill. I've seen first editions of TEATCT move up in price on the Potter auctions in the last ten years. Houdini ephemera is also hot these days. If his copy of this book wasn't in the Library of Congress, it could fetch a really large sum right about now.

About 3 and 1/2 years ago (June 2012), a first edition TEATCT, green cloth, stamped in gold, in reputedly "very good" condition, went at auction (Potter & Potter) for $5000.

At Potter & Potter Auctions (April 14th 2015) the highest result for a first edition was to my knowledge $9.000 (+ 20% buyers premium)

Unbelievable. As intriguing as a 1st edition might be, I'd rather have a Nugget mandolin for that kind of cash. Looks more than a little like a "bubble."

For those without a few grand lying around, there's this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Expert-At-The-C ... SwcdBWTpFu
I wonder what facsimile they are using as the base for this artificial aging--the Canick anniversary edition?

It's selling for less than a hundred dollars, you won't need a few grand for this book. Deliberately distressing a book. They do that now with electric guitars to make them appear vintage with rusted parts and chipped paint.

In "Impromptu," Martin Gardner said he bought a first edition for five dollars when he was young.

When you say "they," do you mean the naughty brigade or the actual manufacturers?
Part of the idea is certainly to make them look sort-of vintage, but they're also designed to give the appearance of having spent years on the road in active service.
Just wondering.

When Martin was young, first editions were barely out of print.

Thanks for pointing that out, Bill.

The manufacturers. Just like first edition Erdnase copies, vintage guitars are too expensive for the average blue collar man. The distressed look on new instruments is more affordable.

Thanks Leonard, although that's more or less what I said.

For future reference, since such info eventually disappears from Ebay, three bidders made four bids, and the winning bid on December 18 was $7,000. It's been added to this list: http://lookingforerdnase.com/sales/
