Looking for a trick

Postby SebT » November 4th, 2015, 12:49 pm

Hey guys,
I saw an effect years ago in GENII or MAGIC and Im trying to find the magazine in question... The effect is this; spectator holds the deck face down and thinks of a random card. According to what his card is, he moves cards from top to bottom. For exemple "If your card is a diamond, move 2 cards to bottom.""If the value is 10, move 10 cards to bottom." Magician then has a look at the faces and instantly reveals the thought-of card. He then shows the faces and they're all blank. If anyone knows which magazine, year and month, I'd be really happy about it! Thanks!

See for instance Cardician's Dream, page 130 of The Cardician by Ed Marlo (1953) which seems to be one of the first version of this effect.

Actually, someone has found a new finish in which, after naming the think card, the magician shows that the deck is blank.

If someone can tell me who is the creator of this variant, thank in advance.

I think you are looking for:
I dream of mind reading by John Lovick.
I saw it on Joshua jay's DVD's "Talk about Tricks", which was a compilation of tricks in the magazine "Magic".

Yes, you are describing John Lovick's trick, several versions of which have appeared (John's lecture notes, Josh's column in MAGIC, etc.) Josh took it a step beyond and fooled Penn and Teller with it, and he explained all at the Genii convention.

Thank you very much.

So we can find the trick in Magic, Vol. 12, no 4, december 2003, page 97.

Does Josh explain his version on his new DVD set?

The original was a marketed trick by Bob Hummer, entitled The Mindreader's Dream and published in 1952.
It seems the idea of a blank deck was by Mitch Dyszel but I have no reference to propose.
