Genii Convention in your pocket

Postby John Signa » September 16th, 2015, 5:01 pm

The mobile guide for the Genii Convention is now available for your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

In addition to the standard info such as schedule, maps, and list of performers, the guide also includes info about the dealers, list of dining options both in and around the Florida Mall (I've heard there's a good Thai place just short walk away), and local attractions (Gatorland, here I come!) backed up with maps and contact info.

Download the Eventbase app:
After you open the app, select Conferences and search for “Genii”
Select "Genii, The Conjuror’s Convention" and tap Launch Event Guide. The guide will be downloaded to your phone or tablet. Whenever new info becomes available, the guide on your phone will be updated automatically.

This app has made my iPad Air 2 crash twice in a row, and reboot. This has never happened before.

Seems to be fine on my Android OS Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I will load it onto my iPad later to check it out.

Edited to add:

Just downloaded it onto my iPad 2. It crashed my iPad into a reset. Sorry. I am guessing that the programmers did not set up the app for the ancient technology of older iPads.

What OS version are you running?
I'll see if I can find an older device and replicate the issue.

I've never understood the need for an app such as a convention schedule to work on an iPad. You consult the schedule when walking around at the convention--when you have your phone in your hand or pocket.

It is the most easily accessible object.

Do many people walk around holding iPads? (An honest question, since I am essentially a hermit in front of a computer.)

I will be bringing my phone. I only loaded the iPad to test the app. My iOS is 8.4.1.

I agree that not too many guys carry an iPad around in a convention venue, but who knows?

I've carried my iPad around to every convention I've attended the past couple of years. I take all my magic notes on it. I have a detachable keyboard, so I can answer email and do work during the breaks. Also at Magic Live, I was lead to believe we were going to be able to download pdf's of the notes. Of course, that didn't happen until way after the event. Honestly, I consider it a quality assurance failure to not test an app on the most current devices before releasing. But that is just my opinion. :D

Of course people carry round tablets. That's kinda the point. They are light and small.

I updated my IOS to 9.0 last night. Although the app doesn't crash my iPad anymore, it is still buggy.

I did intend to carry around my iPad if WiFi was available at the convention. My phone is a BlackBerry so I guess the app isn't available for that device.

Certainly, I take my tablet with me on trips. It is more convenient than a laptop. However, I would personally not prefer a tablet over a phone that fits in a pocket while walking around for 12 hours at a convention site, but that's me.

Regardless, the app should work with Apple products, but apparently it has problems on both iPhones and iPads, so "phooey" to the people who created Eventbase. As it is not a Genii app but a generic one, I do not know what Mr. K can do about it. There are more than a thousand conventions in the database.

I know that the iPad 2 is becoming an orphan in the eyes of Apple Corp. Their Airdrop app does not work on the iPad 2, for instance. When I buy a new tablet, it will be an Android based one that can transfer files properly without an added application

I just updated my iPhone 6 plus's operating system last night and will check the app later today.

The good news is that we will be providing a small printed schedule as well. :)

Just checked it again and definitely doesn't crash my phone. I have no idea why it would crash one iPhone 6 plus and not another. Is everyone's operating system up to date?

There is a version available for Blackberry. I had forgotten about it as during the first three events I used EventBase, only one person downloaded it, so last year at IBM/SAM I simplified the list.

I'm able to replicate the issue with one of the devices I have access to and have a theory as to what is causing the crash which I've forwarded on to see if can get a resolution in time.

Yes should have been more specific.
The app crashed my IPhone 6 Plus using the most up to date version of iOS available to me as at 22.20 last evening.
I'm assuming the Eventbase app has been in existence long before iOS 9.

Could you please give me the name of the app for BlackBerry? I searched for Eventbase but the only thing that showed up was for an old conference.

I would much prefer to own an iPhone but since work provides me a free phone and allows personal use, I can't justify the expense.

The Blackberry link in my message should have taken you directly to it.
App name is Eventbase, company is Xomo.

Thank you for your assistance, but I still cannot find it... I guess my service provider filters some of the available content. It is not the first time I can't find an app on Blackberry.

I'll try my iPod Touch again. If not, a paper program will be just fine.

I sent a message to the developers with what was going on along with the results of my own testing and theory as to the cause and possible solution.

I got word back from the cofounder that they were already looking at the problem and had come to the same conclusion as I did, and are looking at possible fixes. He didn't say when the fixes would be available.

I'll post any updates I get as I get them.

Google "Thai Restaurant near Florida Mall" and see what comes up. They'll probably also know at the front desk.

The Thai place people mentioned at last Genii convention is, I believe, Viet Thai Cafe (http://vietthaicafe.com).

The food court in the mall was just rebuilt and enlarged earlier this year--even less reason to leave the hotel. :) I'm hoping Dairy Queen is still there.

Sorry, Richard... No Dairy Queen.

And while the Food Pavillion isn't fully finished yet, there is a variety of choices for both carnivores and herbivores.

Great idea --thanks for doing this. Getting more and more excited for the convention.

My Iphone 5s with current software crashed when I first went in the app but seems fine after the re-boot.

Trying something for those that are still having issues with the iOS app...
I've set-up a shared calendar to which you can subscribe:
While not as detailed as the full app schedule, this will at least get the schedule onto your device.
Will try to do some cleanup on the flight out to Orlando.

Crashed for me initially, now working...thanks for having a way to get this on the device

It's too late now, but Epro does a phenomenal job with event-specific apps (their niche tends to be associations with around 1,000 attendees at a conference -- so similar group size/budget). Well worth talking to if the conference happens again:

Tech stuff aside, really looking forward to this week. Hope everyone enjoys Orlando and thank you to Richard, Josh, Andi, and team for making this happen!

Cheers,

N
