Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
Many years ago, when dinosaurs ruled the earth (1982 - 1984), I wrote a book on Lin Searles' Cannibal Cards plot. The manuscript was almost finished, a publisher was interested, and then my life went off in other directions, and the book ended up in a box, forgotten.
I found the manuscript recently, and, working through it, it seems to me to be worth reviving and working on.
The manuscript includes a bibliography of all the published methods I knew at the time. It was, I think, reasonably complete as of 1984 but I have no doubt at all that in the interim period more versions have been published, and I should know about them.
I've started to do some research on this, but it would be really great if members here could help me out. Attached is my current list. If you know of any Cannibal routines not here, please let me know, so I can (a) add them, and (b) study them. Partly I want to ensure I don't reprint anything which has been independently reinvented by others in the time since I first worked on the book, and partly I'm a completist nerd and like to know about this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance for any help.
The current list is:

Randy Wakeman had a Marlo-inspired version that appeared on one of his VHS tapes. Unfortunately, I don't recall the name of the effect or the tape.

Ammar's MAJ used to advertise an item called Cannibal Rap - a cannibal routine with, presumable, patter delivered in rap. Never saw an actual copy of the item but remember it being advertised a few times.

A bit of Googling suggests Smorgasbord Cannibals. Published in Apocalypse and in Marlo's 35 Years Later.
A ton of new research to do already, very grateful for all the pointers so far.

That sounds so horribly cheesy I'm going to have to track it down...

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
Roberto Giobbi's Dance of the Cannibals turns out to be the routine I saw him do in London in 1981 which I devised my own handling of, without knowing exactly how he did his. I spotted at the time that Roberto's routine appeared to be a take on Jean-Jacques Sanvert's from Kabbala. Looks like my handling is different enough to stay in though.
The internet sure as hell makes this stuff easier to track down!

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
One of the best Cannibal routines is in "Professional Close-Up of Curtis Kam - Deceptions in Paradise" "Kamnibal Cards: Cannibal Cards with a happy ending; no gaffs" pub. 1996.
Curtis also performs and explains it also in his recent Penguin Magic lecture. Nice different ending that's just great.

Agreed about Curtis Kam's routine. Having only yet managed to watch a proficient but pretty mundane performance of it on Youtube by somebody else, it's definitely a strong handling.

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
Several years ago I started to compile ALL known versions of THE CANNIBAL CARDS to put out a gigantic book. I too shelved it. Therefore, I'm delighted that Ian is taking up the cause and its causal challenges. I can now lock the box of that project and rest east. Meanwhile, I look forward to buying, reading, and celebrating this project. Onward...

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
Hello Jon! I used to badger you with endless letters back in the early 80s, it is very good to come across you again. You were very helpful at the time with some useful thoughts about the cannibal plot, some of which I even took notice of
Many thanks for your lists. The job is certainly more daunting than it was in 1984, but I will get there.
Do you still see Bob Walker? I was in very regular correspondence with him for a few years, and met up with him and his wife in London when they visited around 1982, but lost touch with him. If you are in contact with him send him my warmest regards. And did he ever turn his Crux ms. into something publishable?
Ian

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
Thanks to everyone for the help so far, and for the messages enquiring about progress.
I'm currently working through the lists I've been given, tracking down as much as I can, and attempting to come up with a master list which I'll post in the next week or so.
The project has expanded a bit, and may well now involve contributions from others. Watch this space.

That's a very thorough resource Joe. I will add to it anything I notice it's missing (not much, I suspect...)
Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
did you finally realize it?

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
A quick update. This idea isn't dead, but it has been sleeping quite heavily. Lots of other things got in the way. But it's coming back to the top of the list. It may end up as an ebook rather than a printed book, however. Will keep everyone posted.

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help
I always appreciated the Cannibal Cards as an exceptionally entertaining card routine. But never in my wildest dreams did I begin to imagine that there was such a multitude of versions out there by innumerable luminaries! This is literally a case of the old aphorism, "What you don't know could fill a book." (Referring to myself, of course). I will be waiting with baited breath for the book to get completed and published.
Meanwhile, two cannibals are having a pleasant conversation over dinner. One says to the other, "I hate my mother-in-law!" The other says, "So try the potatoes."
