honestly, I've never understood what's impressive about die stacking.

It leaves me totally cold.

Is it a UK/USA thing?

No Goatman... It is a Chow Yun Fat thing! everyone else can quit now. In the normal world I tend to agree with you tho.But when Chow does it... Oh hells Yeah! And Jonathon? Do you REALLY think there was editing? I find that HIGHLY UNLIKELY!

Tony

And Jonathon... I cant believe you have never seen this... The sequels are kinda strange. Figuring out which one is a sequel for one thing. But I tracked em down years ago and got em on the media box...

Looks like a John Woo movie with all the slo-mo and gun-in-each-hand-while-flying-though-the-air malarkey.

I thought it was a John Woo deal as well (especially with the kick the gun off the floor bit), but it was directed by someone else (Jing Wong AKA Wong Yat Cheong)

From imdb: "Both Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau did their own card manipulations"

That could be interesting.

All the sequels are on YouTube anyway.

Chow Yun Fat was fairly popular in the UK in the mid 90s, around the same time Woo started to be noticed with films like Hard Boiled. I remember thinking at the time (probably out loud, on stage) that I was amazed that there were any Triads left...

One other tip off for a John Woo film is that it contains at least one slow motion shot of birds flapping their wings.

Usually more than one die is stacked. Stacking more than one can be considered somewhat skillful in certain circles. I think it might be entertaining to a less sophisticated audience...lets hope that these folks end up graduating to higher forms of entertainment
to occupy their leisure.

Bobby Bernard did an excellent Dice Stacking routine.

But the most entertaining routine I've seen was performed by Patsy Murphy from Dundalk, Ireland. Both entertaining and skilful, the latter being a tad surprising as prior to that I'd never seen him do anything particularly technical.

I think the best part of this thread is that Quentin knows someone called Patsy Murphy...

As for dice stacking; it's fun to do, requires actual skill and - given the correct presentation - can build into a nice routine.
