Digital edition iOS update

Postby Scott M. » December 12th, 2013, 2:18 pm

Anyone else having problems? The "loading" circle on each issue spins and spins without the issue ever appearing.

Yes, the app has been updated.
Most problems seem to go away if you free up some memory or shut down and restart your machine.

I tried restarting my iPad Air, which has plenty of free memory, to no avail. Deleted the app -- and all the downloaded magazines -- and reinstalled, which seems to have done the trick. (The magazines, of course, need to be re-downloaded.) On the plus side, the update now allows pinch-to-zoom without double tapping first.

I can only speak for myself: my iPad 2 had no problems.

With my iPhone 4S, I had to delete the app and then redownload the issues.

I had one customer write to me, and it turned out he need to free some memory.

I deleted and reloaded iGenii and I now see all the mags. I try to sign in using the same name and password that I use for this forum, but I am not recognized. Is there a different name and password needed for the app?

Mike, the username and password for this Forum have never been the same for the digital access to iGenii.

When you created your iGenii account, did you write down your user name and password that you created? If not, call the office tomorrow and Margret will help you.

I also have an iPad 2. I needed to delete the app and re-download in order to get a working copy. I am now in the process of downloading all the issues for the last three years again.

Not a disaster, but a hassle nevertheless.

Maybe the programmers could try out their new code instead of using us subscribers as beta testers.

Thanks for the quick reply Richard. I found my iGenii name and password. Sorry for the false alarm. I love reading on my iPad and I very much appreciate that my subscription to Genii gives me free access to the back issues. Kudos to you for that!

I am just being curious, but the new version does not allow the choice of whether or not to download media content along with the magazine content. I assume that the media are being downloaded as the issues seem to be taking up more memory than they did before I downloaded them all again. Was this by conscious decision or an oversight?

Oh I know*, it's just people say to reboot and free memory as a general cure all for *windows* machines, not iOS devices!

:)

Anyhoo, I'm unaware of how to "free up memory" on an iOS device and do find the genii app sluggish. How do you do it? Tried a google look to no avail unless I want to run 3rd party apps or jailbreak my device. Neither of which I want to do.

*I was just trying to bait that tall Scottish magician!

The new version of the iPad app does allow you to choose between downloading or viewing the multimedia online.

Yes, the entire issue may be viewed online or downloaded, but previously the video and audio files could be left online when downloading the magazine, thereby keeping the downloaded files smaller but increasing the time it took to view the videos or listen to the audio clips. Or am I going crazy? I recall you even describing this option here in the forum way back when it all started.

Added: I just looked at the Android app which was not just updated and there is definitely a checkbox for downloading the multimedia files as an option. Therefor, I believe I am not going crazy.

You should still have that option. I saw it the other day when testing the iPad update.

Perhaps I should have added that I needed to delete and update the app twice. The second time I updated it, the download screen changed. Perhaps there is a minor update since the one you looked at.

Not a big deal I suppose, but it is nice to save memory space. I doubt that very many people are retaining every issue on their iPads like I am. My 64GB memory should last awhile anyway.

The app seems to have been updated again!

I launched the new app after updating it, but nothing would happen.
So I had to delete the app, then download it again. This meant, of course, that I had to download all the back issues again.

So now I understand what some of you are discussing.
