Holy Smokes! The Bammo Ten Card Deal Dossier actually arrived in the post today, and it's a beauty. 400+ pages, bound in something reminiscent of human skin, gold embossed cover, Tony Dunn illustrations -- this is a beauty.

I'm very pleased to have contributed a tiny bit to this huge project by my friend Bob Farmer.

There are also the two bonus tricks on a seperate piece of paper which I mentioned above that I think are worth the price of the book, especially if you don't feel like wading through 400+ pages.

Ordering info etc. etc. are also above somewhere.

I said reminiscent of human skin.

It's much, much cheaper to send a box of books than just one book, so in three situations so far, we've pre-sold a box of books. It works like this: one guy gets 7 of his friends together and places one order for 8 books (8 is the magic number). We will then ship the box to that guy. It has to be a multiple of 8 because a box holds 8.

Many thanks for that......

But there’s the rub, Horatio. Who among us has seven good and true friends. Pals? Chums? Colleagues? Confidantes? Compeers? Cronies? :(

Some, perhaps many, but not I, said the oak tree. And that’s what you get for a lifetime of solitude and reclusivity. Magic clubs? Who needs ’em.

Still I’ll pass round the hat and see what turns up. But I beg you sirrah, please don’t hold your breath. :)

For $25 it's easier and simpler to get individual books sent direct, unless you're in a club where you can see your fellow 7 regularly. UK postage has gone to hell.

Shipping started Tuesday and is continuing every day. By next week, about mid-week, all the orders should be out the door. There has been and continues to be a massive response to the book, and I thank each and every purchaser for their hard-earned dollars. Orders have flooded in from all over the world. It's amazing!

My next project will be The Bammo Flim-Flam CONglomeration, another massive tome of scams, bar nets, card tricks and other stuff. It will be in the same format as the Dossier, so side by side, they will look fantastic on the shelf.

The Dossier looks fantastic because of the advice I received from Mr. Kaufman, who knows a thing or two about how that sort of thing is done.

All shipping is done from beautiful downtown Ogdensburg, NY, a little village nestled like a pearl on the neck of Northern New York state and caressed by the surging waters of the St. Lawrence River as it seeks the freedom and space of the Atlantic Ocean in the east. The lovely ladies at the post office there have kindly consented to give me priority status and on my arrival I get my own person and my own postal station, while the villagers look on in wonder as what seems like thousands of boxes containing a mysterious something pile up--a book, I told one of them in answer to a what's that question, a sort of "Bible," and this seemed to make it all okay.

And yes, each and every copy contains that additional material, that stuff you just will not believe, all inscribed on a beautiful vellum-like substrate and tied with a ribbon made from intertwined Alpaca back fur woven by artisans I hire in Bobonime.

Okay, I was lying about the vellum and the ribbon, it's all on HP photocopy paper, but everything else is true. Well, except that stuff about the artisians. I made that up. I made up Bobonime too.

I think Bob's next book should be nothing but ad copy and promotional blurbs. At these things he has no equal (at least since Frank Pemper died).

Frank Pemper is a god in my eyes. We should create a collection of Frank Pemper ads. At the very least, they would be an antidote to what seems to be the prevalent ad style today: dark pages, no effect descriptions, pictures of guys wandering around on mean streets.

I completely agree with the sheer awfulness of the ads in today's magic magazines, mostly style with no substance. Vagueness and a hope you will look at their webpage, and even then that's usually in small print.

"When I write an advertisement, I don't want you to tell me that you find it 'creative.'
I want you to find it so interesting that you buy the product."

Ah yes, Good old David Ogilvy.

Meanwhile, I used to enjoy J. Stewart Smith’s trick descriptions. That is, the Effect, as he told it.
The tricks were generally serviceable, using standard procedures, but the build up was something else. I’m sure he had a twinkle in his eye and his tongue in his cheek, but I thought they were fun.

Leo there are lots of pictures. However, we are considering an audiobook, but there would be no pictures, just me talking.

As to deliveries: the post office is really weird: books arrive in the UK before they arrive in the U.S. That combined with the massive response the book has received (thank you all!) means books have been shipping every day for the last two weeks, but all orders should be out the door no later than tomorrow.

This also means that if you want a copy of the book, better order soon before they are all gone.

So far, all the reviews have been great.

Thank you to everyone for their support.

Reading the Basil Horrowitz routine reminds me of the first time I saw the Ten Card Deal.

It was a British Ring convention, probably 1979 or 1980. Basil was onstage for one of the afternoon shows (probably Peter Warlock's) and his audience helper was Cedric Richardson.

I'd never seen the trick and didn't know the principle. But I was emotionally hooked by the presentation. In the last phase, Cedric could "choose" his own hand and yet he still lost. I couldn't understand it. This was unbelievable.

Afterwards I spoke to Cedric about it. He said, "I know how it works and you can't win."

I said, "Surely if you know how it works, you can win."

Cedric smiled and said, "If only."

I started the book last night. As I progressed through the the opening bits, brilliant ideas for routines popped into my head. But as I read further I found my brilliant ideas were already in the book.

Mr. Farmer, you shall hear from my lawyers!

Larry:

I met with your lawyer, Lester Chickenfug. Where did you find this guy? I'm not sure he's a real lawyer. He was selling ice cream out of the back of a truck with a sign that said, "Cones $1.50--Wills Drafted $50."

Anyway, I explained to him that the large man with me, Carlo Santini (aka "Carlo The Ape of Doom") was going to crazy glue Lester's tongue to the exhaust pipe if we heard any more about this matter.

Then we bought some ice cream, and had Lester draft HIS OWN will since, as I explained to him, you never can tell when someone might want to assassinate your entire being.

I think that settles it, Larry. Enjoy the book, but don't think any more bad thoughts. The Ape of Doom knows where you live.
