The O'Regan finding from 1992 that one can pretty much change everything that's not in active focus during a saccade seems promising. Just keep in mind that our peripheral vision is sensitive to motion rather than features - hence the validity of that old advice about moving what you want them to watch and keeping everything else relatively static.

Re: Tom Stone series

The latest June installment is extremely useful to those developing routines and working on presentation. This info helps to explain how some performers can "get away with" certain methods that will not fly for other performers. Such info is used when I develop custom products suited only for performers who understand such things and can successfully utilize them in a presentation. Such toys are not for everyone. Other magicians will say things like "I will not fool anyone with that method". I suggest that performers really study what Tom is explaining and start putting the principles into use. Miracles can be built upon his writings. Read that last sentence again.

This small field of vision discussed in the column is also why many performances on TV fall way short of impressing people. The whole TV screen may lie within the "focused area". I've never felt that the cups and balls looked like anything on TV due to some of this info.

An aside . . .
Extrapolating the info in the June column leads magicians to skills they have never developed. An example: When attending a performance by a particularly bad performer you can constantly dart your eyes around the hall and virtually make the guy vanish!
As any woman will tell you, men can tune out conversation - especially when talking about feelings. Magicians can easily fool other male magicians by discussing how they feel about something while controlling where they look. If we males perfect this skill, we can also tune out the bad performer and never hear him! Tom is giving good practical info in this series.

Back on topic . . .

The first installment on knowing what the effect is was a perfect place to begin. Too many performers do not understand what it is that they are trying to do - so how could anyone expect the audience to understand what is going on? The effect can utilize the same props as other performers yet create a completely differect "reality" for the spectators. This is critical to consider for any serious performers.

Tom's second installment on kepping and using a notebook as a means of developing creativity is so true. Ideas are so fleeting and many, that they vanish if not recorded. Rather than a notebook, I utilize slips of paper that can later be moved around and classified as desired. Here are three examples of my "notebook" entries:

You can develop a notebook style that works for you.

Perhaps the next installment in Tom's series will be upon how to utilize pattern recognition to throw off the spectators. This logically follows what has gone before and is an extremely powerful tool in the hands of a magician. I eagerly await the next column. Thanks for doing the series for Genii, Tom.

The problem evidentally is not Royal Mail, but the vendor that our private company hires to get the magazines over to Europe.

The problem is with the vendors our mailing company is using to transport the mail to the UK. They have had complaints from many other companies as well. At this point I don't know if the opaque envelope will make a difference, but I certainly am curious to know!
