Re: June Genii
A few pertinent links for this month's article on perception in conjuring:
here and here.
The O'Regan finding from 1992 that one can pretty much change everything that's not in active focus during a saccade seems promising. Just keep in mind that our peripheral vision is sensitive to motion rather than features - hence the validity of that old advice about moving what you want them to watch and keeping everything else relatively static.
Okay, one more for those who like the retention pass: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articl ... id=1343538
This does not in any way diminish the necessity of establishing rapport to get their mirror neuron systems working in our favor and also the importance of moving in ways that appear congruent to what they believe are our intentions in action.

Thanks! I haven't seen those texts. The third link - damn difficult language there. Will take some time to break that down.

Yep, I'll drink to that! Did you enjoy the article?

I am in TX to spend time with in law's family so will check the magazine first thing when I get back home from vacation if it arrives.
Re: June Genii
June issue arrived in Tucson on May 15.
Re: Tom Stone series
The latest June installment is extremely useful to those developing routines and working on presentation. This info helps to explain how some performers can "get away with" certain methods that will not fly for other performers. Such info is used when I develop custom products suited only for performers who understand such things and can successfully utilize them in a presentation. Such toys are not for everyone. Other magicians will say things like "I will not fool anyone with that method". I suggest that performers really study what Tom is explaining and start putting the principles into use. Miracles can be built upon his writings. Read that last sentence again.
This small field of vision discussed in the column is also why many performances on TV fall way short of impressing people. The whole TV screen may lie within the "focused area". I've never felt that the cups and balls looked like anything on TV due to some of this info.
An aside . . .
Extrapolating the info in the June column leads magicians to skills they have never developed. An example: When attending a performance by a particularly bad performer you can constantly dart your eyes around the hall and virtually make the guy vanish!
As any woman will tell you, men can tune out conversation - especially when talking about feelings. Magicians can easily fool other male magicians by discussing how they feel about something while controlling where they look. If we males perfect this skill, we can also tune out the bad performer and never hear him! Tom is giving good practical info in this series.
Back on topic . . .
The first installment on knowing what the effect is was a perfect place to begin. Too many performers do not understand what it is that they are trying to do - so how could anyone expect the audience to understand what is going on? The effect can utilize the same props as other performers yet create a completely differect "reality" for the spectators. This is critical to consider for any serious performers.
Tom's second installment on kepping and using a notebook as a means of developing creativity is so true. Ideas are so fleeting and many, that they vanish if not recorded. Rather than a notebook, I utilize slips of paper that can later be moved around and classified as desired. Here are three examples of my "notebook" entries:
http://www.jamesriser.com/Magic/RiserNo ... can1Sm.jpg
http://www.jamesriser.com/Magic/RiserNo ... can2Sm.jpg
http://www.jamesriser.com/Magic/RiserNo ... can3Sm.jpg
You can develop a notebook style that works for you.
Perhaps the next installment in Tom's series will be upon how to utilize pattern recognition to throw off the spectators. This logically follows what has gone before and is an extremely powerful tool in the hands of a magician. I eagerly await the next column. Thanks for doing the series for Genii, Tom.

Great to see David Britland writing for GENII. Now, if you could only get him to publish some more of his elegant brand of card magic...

Re: June Genii
Our carrier is experimenting with some different types of services which is why your copy came directly from the US.
The problem evidentally is not Royal Mail, but the vendor that our private company hires to get the magazines over to Europe.
We're far from the only company having this problem: there are many dozens of others.

Re: June Genii
I just finished my first pass through the June issue, and I just wanted to say I think this was a stellar issue. The Houchin interview/Magicana was particularly good, IMO, as was Tom Stone's article.
Long may it wave.

Best feature (beyond Max Maven's penultimate Inquisition) is Paul Osborne's art and description of Andrew Mayne's Shadow Box illusion that can be performed surrounded. It will make you want to build one.

I'm pretty sure it was airmail. A 2 year sub which started with March 08 cost me 122 euros then.

Well, in the UK, I haven't received April, May and June's issues. Margaret sent me a replacement for April (which arrived three days ago), but the other magazines haven't turned up yet... :(

Anyone in the Yookay had their May issue yet - by either Air Mail or Budget Class?
The June issue should be the first to arrive in an opaque envelope - will be interesting to see if it suffers the same fate as many of my previous 12 months issues. (At this point, a big thank you goes to Margret at Genii Towers for arranging replacements!)
Cheers

Re: June Genii
The problem is with the vendors our mailing company is using to transport the mail to the UK. They have had complaints from many other companies as well. At this point I don't know if the opaque envelope will make a difference, but I certainly am curious to know!

Richard
Do you incur a cost each time a replacement issue is mailed out or are you able to clawback this expense from the mailing company?
Cheers

Re: June Genii
Hi Richard,
It seems to be working, my June issue arrived here in the UK this morning under the plain envelope scheme.
I also got replacements for March and April under a plain envelope, the only one I am missing now is May which I presume went out in the usual way, have contacted Margret for a replacment.
Rich.

I received yesterday June's issue, but haven't received May yet... I did receive a replacement issue for April in plain envelope (thank you!). If I don't get May's in the next couple of weeks, I'll contact the office...

Yes - the June issue appeared today in the 'you can't tell what's inside' envelope.
The May issue, in it's traditional see-through costume, has not yet arrived - will leave it for a few days before contacting Margret.
Matt - the Magic Circular is no doubt distributed to the four corners of the world, do you experience similar problems with mail carriers?
Cheers

Andrew --The Magic Circular is a comparatively tiny magazine with 1500 copies sent out. They are posted in opaque white envelopes.
