February Issue of Genii Now Arriving!
Re: February Issue of Genii Now Arriving!
Got mine a few days ago.
The Feb 2008 issue alone is worth the annual subscription price. The Zarrow article is brilliant and is packed with lots of very interesting, entertaining, and useful information.
Richard, regarding your question about which DVDs to review -- whether you should review the good or the bad -- for some reason I am always first drawn to read the BAD reviews and then I go to the GOOD. I like the current balance you have and would like to continue seeing reviews of both great and crappy products.
It's just as important to warn us about seriously bad products as it is to tell us about great products.
Thanks,
Kevin

Got mine today, Jan 18th, Greenwood IN.
I always enjoy the Giobbi write-ups and the Hollingworth column is becoming a favorite as well. Good weekend reading for sure.

Re: February Issue of Genii Now Arriving!
This is an incredible issue! In terms of product reviews I think the most important thing is shining a spotlight on that which is excellent but obscure.
Also, Giobbi asks if readers would "occasionally enjoy reading one or two more articles of this type dealing with details of handling." My answer is YES.

Zarrow shuffle article sounds very interesting, but having just re-subscribed earlier this month, hope I will get this one along with the January issue, as the article on the 10th Los Angeles Conference of Magic History should be a good read.

Received Volume 71, Number 2, today, January 19, 2008, in Hobart, Indiana, 46342.
I really do not think it (date of delivery) is determined by the following criteria... distance from printers, use of the five + four zip code or being a buddy of Richard.... but rather that you are at the mercy of how the magazines are delivered to the Post Office and how the Postal System handles them.....

Re: February Issue of Genii Now Arriving!
Just opened my Feb. Genii (must have arrived yesterday 01/19/08).
Thanks for the Teller "Scottish Play" article and the "Magic Inc." article. It's ironic (intentional I'm sure) that they were adjacent in the magazine. Sandy Marshall LOVES the Scottish Play.
Love the "damned spot" shot of Teller and Posner. Nice color.

Hi;
Really enjoyed the Zarrow material! Has anybody else had the center page pop loose from the staples? I think it's probably because this issue is so full of good material.

Roberto is my hero. He can give no wrong advice, as far as I'm concerned. (Even if I disagree with something he says, which is practically never, he always makes me think more deeply than I thought I would.)

Re: February Issue of Genii Now Arriving!
Good morning, Richard
Received Genii in Lafayette, Indiana about a week ago.
This Feb issue will be a tough act to follow.
An earlier reader announced that this issue was more than the price of admission. I vote with him.
I also received Girogio's ned DVD's. A tremendous addition to the card worker's library. The dvd's are a treasure.
Where was this kind of information in 1950?
Please continue as with your current standards.

Re: February Issue of Genii Now Arriving!
This is one of the most valuable issues in a while. The details on how to do a proper Zarrow shuffle and the shuffle's remarkable history are must reading for anyone remotely interested in card magic.
My only disappointment was the confirmation that Teller plans to use guys as the witches in Macbeth. My favorite version of Macbeth was at the Old Globe in San Diego the summer that they used beautiful naked blondes as the witches (I think they were actually wearing body stockings, but we got the idea). That, I think, might be more appealing to the target audience of 15-year-old boys who like horror movies.

Oh Steve, you do have a one track mind. :) I bet your dream production of MacBeth would have Melinda cloned to play all three witches in the nude.

Great issue folks,
Glad to see Herb Zarrow and his work get its due respect. Also good to see some advance notice on the Teller production of Macbeth.
However, this grup is hoping to get to attend a performance while the show's in NJ :)

the demographic who like texting, type in shorthand and might possibly have seen the Dr Who episode from last season which featured Shakespeare as a pop star of his time... maybe. Come on - the good stuff happens while the drunken night watchman is getting up to answer the door - not quite the way horror movies are presented. ;)Originally posted by Steve Bryant:

Arrived in Copenhagen today. Couldn't put the issue down - the correspondance between Marlo and Zarrow is simply riveting.
On page 80 it says "see the six page letter reproduced on these pages", however the letter seems to be missing ?
A truly lovely issue.
And congratulation to Richard Kaufman on his 10 year anniversary as Genii editor/publisher :)

Rats! That six-page Marlo letter took another two pages in the magazine, and we simply ran out of space for the article (24 pages seemed enough!) so we deleted the Marlo letter at the last minute. We neglected to take out the mention in the text.

Re: February Issue of Genii Now Arriving!
I don't have the article in front of me - I gave my copy of Genii to a friend earlier this afternoon - but I imagine that you are referring to a letter in which Marlo illustrated a variety of multiple cut sequences for getting into the shuffle, sequences that he submitted to Jay Marshall for the New Phoenix. Marlo used his typical mode of illustration - dividing the deck into four blocks (A-B-C-D) to illustrate the movement of the various blocks during the pre-shuffle cutting sequence. I had assumed that Richard was going to include a page or two from this letter as visual support material for the article but never expected for him to reproduce the entire missive. In my opinion, the cut sequences are somewhat convoluted. I understand, however, that some may be interested in this sort of detail and will consider various options for reproducing the letter either more fully in the Zarrow book or through an alternate medium.
Frankly, I'm pleased that many of you have the interest and have taken the time to read the piece. So, thanks.
