August Issue of Genii has been Mailed

This new Dai Vernon issue is - outstanding. This issue plus the "Revelation" book are the best things I read in a very long time.
What is great in the "Reminiscences in Sleight of Hand with Dai Vernon" section in Genii is that Richard just wrote the exact words Vernon used in the tapes. And Vernon had a very specific way of talking: it is just like I heard the Professor. Absolutly great job Richard!!

Matt's execution of this control is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen (or more correctly not seen - it doesn't seem possible that the card is controlled) and was a real highlight of the IBM/SAM convention. You guys are in for a treat if you get to see this on Reel Magic.

I have just received the August Genii and read with some interest the interview with Dai Vernon. I naturally agree with his opinion of The Ramsay Legend, but there are a couple of his comments which puzzle me. He stated that "John Ramsay was not technically clever except with thimbles", then goes on to say how he fooled all the experts with The Cylinder & Coins. Anyone who has tried to master this effect as written will know that it is anything but easy and John could execute it perfectly. This seems to contradict Dai`s statement, especially if you also take into account the other Ramsay coin routines and The Cups & Balls, Cards To Pocket,Triple Restoration etc. John always tried to conceal his skill by making his sleights appear as natural as possible in keeping with his personality and the shape of his hands, which were not what the layman and even some magicians looked like they were adaptable to manipulation. "Be natural" was the advice that Vernon repeated often in his lectures and writings and maybe he inadvertantly paid Ramsay the highest compliment. Finally, Houdini could not have seen Ramsay perform The Cylinder & Coins as he died eight years before John made his first trip to the USA. Even when he was pushing ninety, Dai had a remarkable memory, but obviously on this occasion he got Houdini confused with someone else.

Andy, I was also puzzled by Vernon's remark, but it does coincide in one sense with Ramsay's own opinion that he was "best" with thimbles. Obviously Ramsay's technical prowess with other items must have been great if he fooled them all with the Cylinder and Coins as you point out. And it's also true that Ramsay could not have performed for Houdini unless Houdini saw him in London or Scotland.

However, I decided to print Vernon's remarks as he made them because they represented, mistakes and all, the type of thing he said as he said it.

John Ramsay saw Houdini perform several times and while he was impressed with his showmanship, did not rate him highly as a magician. The nearest they came to meeting was when John paid a visit to Will Goldston in his London premises and bought a bound volume of Houdini`s Conjuror`s Monthly Magazine. Goldston said that he expected the great man anytime and he would get him to sign the item. Unfortunately John had to leave to catch a train backhome and the opportunity was gone.

I talked to Richard about this, and there just isnt enough hours in a day to allow him time to do this.

However if he had 20,000 Genii subscribers, then he would be able to have time, since he can hire more people to do thing.

Jon, it's the editing part. I was in radio for years and years and editing an interview as long as the one Richard did with Vernon would take quite a while, even with today's technology.

Dub multiple tapes to mutiple mp3s, edit the mp3s, combine the mp3s, then release the combined MP3.

Better than the old days of cutting tape, but still a very time consuming project.
