That raises a question: Do we get stories of theater audiences doing the lines along with the players onstage? Let's omit the Rocky Horror Picture Show phenomenon from consideration on this one.

They may not recite along with the performer, but a lot of folks know their Shakespeare and will evaluate a performer's delivery of certain speeches or lines by comparing them to other performers they've seen (or their own reading).

Folks attending Broadway shows often know the lyrics to the whole show, and will compare performers to others who have inhabited their role and/or sung their part.

Music and other verse/poetic expressions can sustain more repetition in part because they are typically more complex and nuanced than, for instance, a narrative about the ace of spades possessing special qualities, or whatever parable accompanies a rope routine. And music isn't burdened by the idiotic aphorism "there's no such thing as bad songs, only bad singers."
