Updated Forum Features

Postby Richard Kaufman » December 25th, 2002, 12:44 pm

The Genii Santa is here to tell you about two new features Webmaster Brad (To Magic Infinity ... and BEYOND!) has added in updating our software today.
First, there is a new button at the upper left of each thread that has a blue arrow and reads, "Jump to new posts." Click on it and it will take you to the first new post since you last visited the thread.
Second, there is now a little icon of a blowing whistle along the bottom of each post that reads "report post" so that any member who sees a post from a trouble maker, or a post that he or she feels the moderators need to see, can alert us immediately. Please USE IT!
I have repeatedly deleted Mark Lewis, and he just keeps re-registering under his own name and the name "card trickster." I ask all members to alert the moderators if he should reappear so he can be deleted. We'll delete him every day if we have to! :)
All hail Webmaster Brad: making our on-line lives easier every day. (He also just turned 18 last Sunday, so wish him happy birthday!)

Given that Time Magazine has named 3 "Whistleblowers" as its persons of the year, the new whistle icon appears to be very timely and appropriate.

Now I can say I really got everything I wanted for Christmas.

Thanks for implementing it.

Yep. The troll removal and "Lewis Alert" button are a welcome addition. Nice work Brad.

For some reason the email notifications were knocked out when we added the new things....

Not to worry, I'll figure out how to put em' back.

Brad,

When you put back the e-mail notification, can you set it so that the default is not to e-mail the poster?

I constantly had to go back and edit posts so I didn't get 53 notifications that someone posted after me...

Thanks!

I asked Brad to set the e-mail notification to always be "on" as the default. My feeling is that it stimulates people to come back to the thread and see what the response is, generating more interaction on the forum.

I agree with Brian. It would be great if the default was off rather than on. If you forget to remove the check mark you're inundated with mail telling you every time someone posts to the thread.

God help you if you post to a popular topic like the 3Fly thread, without removing the check mark, and don't check your email for a day... by the time you notice that you forgot you've got fifteen emails.

Richard and Brad:

I also vote for the "off" default.

Multiple notifications are bothersome. One winds up spending time cleaning out one's personal email a couple of times a day, especially on those hot topics Bill mentioned.

But I ain't the Head Genii. :genii:

Checking the documentation for the forum software employed here I see that it, unlike similar software, cannot have the email option set as a user's preference. Whilst I can see Richard's view that thread stimulation is a good thing, perhaps a vote by the forum's users may be an agreeable course of action?

After all, the daily email "combing" which we all endure is a dubious bi-product of internet participation which we could all do without. This, I hasten to add, is a generalisation, and not aimed directly at this forum.

Well, until Brad figures out how to turn it back on, it's a moot point.

Au Contraire, Richard. Now is the perfect time to figure out this question, so when it comes back on we're ready.

I vote "off", and I encourage others to do the same. I'm for anything that reduces the number of computer-generated email messages I receive.

The forum does not need any artificial stimulating. Only recently Richard shut down the forum because it had become, essentially, too stimulating.

Vote Off and Vote Often.

If you don't want Mark Lewis to come back why not just ban his IP address?

The board Administrator should be able to do that very easily.

If the guy keeps causing problems give him the boot...permenently.

It's a heck of a lot easier then keep deleting messages.

Sorry dude, this is Kaufmans house, your a gues. If you acted rudely in my house I'd kick you out.

Richard should do the same.

Why do you keep banning Mark Lewis anyway? He has opinions and posts regularly and I usually find him funny. Isn't that the kind of person you want posting?

I thought Lewis and Richard Kaufman were friends??

Unfortunately, most surfers have a dynamic IP adress which is allocated upon logging on for that session. If we all had static IP addresses much dross could be filtered out to the benefit of all. It was a nice thought though.

If we are taking a vote, I also vote for having the e-mail notification default set at "off". I don't need reminders to check Genii, heck I NEED my fix! :D
