If you consider the bizarre or cros twist tricks to be "warps" then I think you would have to call any of the Twisting the aces and especially their visual variants "warps."

Tunnel tricks where the cards reverse as they pass through the deck?

I don't think they're in the same class. In a tunnel the card only turns 180 degrees. When the card is folded in half it's effectively 360 degrees.

Roy said to me that in order to be considered a warp effect, the carp cannot simply turn over whether pushed thru a tunnel or whatever. I'm of the belief that the card must be folded for the cardwarp effect to take place.

Jeff, what's your feeling about Kaufman's item where a card goes literally inside out - where you wind up with the grey layers on the outside?

Jonathan, Philippe asked about the "Kaufman item" but you haven't told us what it is. It sounds like Ben Harris' "Dimensional Relativity", and the concept seems to me to be quite different from Card Warp.

Jonathan I'm not familiar with the Kaufman idea but I suppose in the right situation it could be concidered in the same family.

In Cardmagic, the only reversal by Kaufman is :

The World's Fastest Reverse, page 35 & 38.

But no relation with Card Warp.

Maybe Fusion in "Cardworks"? That's two cards apparently fused together face to face though with backs showing, so maybe not.

Hmmm - I can't get to my library (down in Queens) but I recall seeing a gaff made where you split two cards and rejoin them so the outside layers (that grey stuff) are on the outside.

Now if what I'm remembering is my own stuff from way back when ... it's mine and you are free to go have fun with it - but I recall it being in one of the early Kaufman books and one that was out before I went back to college so that's upper bound of four years after that great Don England binder book on red paper with the custom gaffs (thanks Don).

In Cardworks (1981), it's a version of Card Tunnel by Schwarzman & Krenzel. See The Original Card Tunnel, page 99, and The Amazing Ace Tunnel by Kaufman, page 113.
Page 119, another version entitled Ace Tunnel: Second Position (with a gimmick) by Kaufman, Krenzel & Arthur.

Hm, I cannot recall that, but in Cardworks there are effects in which two cards are openly fused into a double backer and then split again, see here.

Ben Harris has a routine called Dimentional Relativity that involved cards turning inside out. If it's not in the backstory yet, I imagine it will be soon.

Apocalypse contains few handlings. Star Warp by Howie Schwarzman? And, Martin Cox (from UK) has a popular version...

So Jeff,Any idea when might we see this book? I'm not trying to pin you down but I am really excited about your project. Later this Year, early next, 2012?

I love this effect and having all the different version colllected in one volume will be great. I can't wait.

Just asking.

Hey Jeff,

I have a card warp effect called THE CONTORTIONIST. It is a small manuscript describing MICHAEL GILES's effect and written by Stacy Jones. It came out in 1995 and was published by 'MAGICAL ENCOUNTERS PRESENTS...'

If you want it I can send you my copy. Just get in touch with an address...

All the best,

Joe

Bob McAllister has a version with a card and a dollar bill in Apocalypse January 1983 (page 721) and there is a version also with a card and a bill in Richard's Almanac #13 - September 1983 by Bob and with a variation by Tony Miller.

:( ouch.

While you're with us on this thread, I recall an inside out card - with the grey stuff on the outside - as used in a tunnel/warp trick in one of your early works. Would you happen to recall that item? I'd like to give credit to whoever thought to split a card and invert the layers.

thanks in adavnce,

Issue one of volume 2 IS issue 13. The issues were numbered consecutively over the course of the three volumes.

Jon, there is no inside-out card per se in any of my published works. No gray layers on the outside. I published a trick called "The Inside Out Deck" in CardWorks, which is a handling of All Backs that incorporates my idea of splitting double-backed cards openly in front of the audience--in this case to reveal the four Aces, making it a version of the Elmsley All Backs routine which used real double-faced cards.

Thanks Richard.

Any prior claims on the (mis)use of the gaffs for Ken Krenzel's transposition - in Apocalypse - as a finale for cardwarp? IE you tear the cards and leave them with impossible half/half transposed. For completeness you start with an extra layer on half the warp/torn card - lightly waxed.

That's Ken's gaffed two card transpo with two split face cards, one horizontal split and the other vertical. Put them in card warp position (cringe if handmade) and fold - then tear to show shocking half transpo. ;)

Thanks Philippe.

Bit expensive approach but when it comes to impressing a customer ...

It's okay to publish that with the waxed on layer Jeff. Yes you have to be cozy with the two card spread before you fold the tunnel card and yes I know that means you can't open the tunnel for one of the displays folks sometimes like to do (well unless you go the misprint using spot cards route ;) ) IMHO it's a small step from Ken's item to that - with the cleanup of the extra bit so tiny at the end (crumple after you slide off) that almost all "credit" goes to Ken Krenzel and a thanks to Harry Lorayne.

Anyone doing the warp where the card turns inside out around a borrowed ring or coin?
