Re: Inventing The Ten Card Poker Deal
Here's an update:
1. The book is finished.
2. It is 397 pages, not counting the contents pages.
3. There are 263 entries, not counting the references.
4. The are 296 references.
5. The book will sell for $75 U.S. plus postage and handling. Because postage to the U.K and Europe is so ridiculously high, I'm looking into fulfilling those orders from Scotland from a cache of books that will be stored there.
6. I'm proud to announce that David Ben and Julie Eng will be the publishers through Magicana:
http://www.magicana.com/portfolio/publications/
7. I hope to have a pre-publication discount offer up shortly--as soon as I do, I'll post the details here.

I hear the book will have four different colored covers, and for each ten books printed there are three each of red, green, and blue, and only one of yellow.

Count Dracula: I am Dracula.
Renfield: Oh, it's really good to see you. I don't know what happened to the driver and my luggage and... Well, and with all this, I thought I was in the wrong place.
Count Dracula: I bid you welcome.
[Dracula goes up the stairs. Renfield starts to follow him. Suddenly, Dracula hears wolves howling]
Count Dracula: Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make.
[Dracula goes up the steps and waits for Renfield, who, without difficulty, cuts open a hole in a huge spider's web using his walking stick]
Count Dracula: The spider spinning his web for the unwary fly. The blood is the life, Mr. Renfield.
Renfield: Why, er... yes.
Announcement soon, children of the night. The web has been spun, it only remains to be printed.

Re: Inventing The Ten Card Poker Deal
Thanks for the update. I'll be glad when the book comes out. I've waited more than a decade for this book; I can easily wait a few more months.
I think the couple folks speaking of a "deal" and a "deal getting worse" are off base. Unlike, say, Todd Karr, Bob Farmer has taken no one's money for this book. There is no deal to discuss. He owes no one anything.

Re: Inventing The Ten Card Poker Deal
To the extent that I started the "deal" subthread, let me say it wasn't meant to cast aspersions on the good Mr. Farmer. I was only riffing on the Star Wars comment in the previous post.

Likewise--my post had nothing to do with my very high opinion of Mr. Farmer, and I certainly apologize for any inadvertent implication to the contrary.
I was just posting in response to Bill's message because I think the Adult Swim parody is funny and I know Mr. Farmer has a great sense of humor.

Robert:
I'll have a date very soon.
I'm also working on having the U.K. and European orders fulfilled from Scotland, to limit to some extent the outrageous postage charges. Keep an eye here:

Re: Inventing The Ten Card Poker Deal
Looks like a wonderful collection!
But Poker Cheat by Gary Jones & Chris Congreave has one of the best endings.
Has anyone else thought of five aces?
By the way, Mr Farmer's name may well be a pseudonym.
If this link is valid, he might have to change his name to Mr Tax Collector...

Re: Inventing The Ten Card Poker Deal
What's the ending? Is it five aces, as you imply? If so, there are a couple of ideas in the book that use a wild card to produce a really good five card hand and there are several routines where the ending is a Royal Flush.
I didn't cover video versions in the book since that would have been an endless journey and it seemed like I was already on an endless journey.
Yes, I did know that "Farmer" meant a tax collector (in the sense that the farmer owned the land and the indentured slaves worked it and paid for the privilege). "Steinmeyer" translates as "tenant farmer" so if I was an Englishman in the 15th century, Jim Steinmeyer would be paying me rent.
Ironically, "Stokes" is based on the Russian word, "stolichnaya " which means "one who likes vodka."
