Re: Poker Face by Martin Adams

I'm not familiar with Martin Adams' specific trick discussed here, but for anyone who wants to explore the age-old binary principle as applied to a memorized deck, I'd recommend checking out my friend Mergel Funsky's effect "Binary Think-a-Card" on my website at: Mergel Funsky's Binary Thi...

Re: The Magic Clown TV Show

This thread brings back (very) old memories -- of my one and only "real" television appearance. Each week the Magic Clown show featured a different Junior Magician, and at age 15 I appeared on the show in January 1959, doing two minutes. I received a Certificate (which I still have) and an...

Re: Looking for Information on Alwyn (Al) Stevenson

Those of us (teenagersthen) who were members of F.A.M.E. (Future American Magical Entertainers, a club sponsored by the New York Dept of Parks) were fortunate enough to have a "private"lecture by Al, presented to our club, at which he did sponges and other close-up. It was somewhere around...

Re: Faro Shuffles - a new idea?

It takes me only about 5 seconds to go from a randomly shuffled deck to full Aronson stack, and it's quite practical. On the offbeat, just put the randomly shuffled deck into your pocket, and casually withdraw the cold deck Aronson stack. Then give the deck a full deck false shuffle. (For faro addic...

Re: Marked Memorized Deck

For those who want to pursue a marked memorized deck, Marlo suggested that each card be marked with that card's Stack Number, instead of with the card's name ("Marked Memory," in The Pallbearer's Review). He felt it was easier to mark numbers (2 digits, 1 - 10) than 13 values with 4 suits....

Re: Memorized deck

It depends on the particular circumstances, and specifically on what comes before and what follows. Sometimes the casual cutting of the deck (to cut the desired position to the top or the bottom) can sometimes be built into an effect (see, for example, step 6 of my Two Beginnings, in Try the Impossi...

Re: Simon Aronson Lecture (Sat. Jan 25)

Pete Biro wrote Simon, come out to L.A. We have better weather than you will find at 5082 N. Lincoln! Last time I lectured there it was snowing horizontally! It'll be 79-degrres F. here this weekend. Thanks Pete. The only advantage of the below zero weather here is that it's easier to introduce a co...

Re: John Bannon's Wedding

John prefers to make the easy decisions first (like getting married).

His book plans aren't fully finalized, but at this point he intends to publish it himself. In any event, it certainly will be available through the major distribution channels.

John Bannon's Wedding

Im very happy to report that my good friend John Bannon married the delightful Christina in a simple New Years Eve ceremony. (For those of you who know John, no, this is not a Mirage, an Impossibilia, or Smoke and Mirrors it really happened!) This made our toasts last night doubly meaningful, and no...

Re: Openly stacking a Memorized Deck

Allan The classic procedure you mention has its basis in Nikola. It's doable (in a pinch), and depends on how attentive your audience is. A couple fairly standard tips: 1)try a pseudo memory presentation: after forcing the bottom four cards of your stack, while the spectators hold their selections, ...

Re: 21 card trick

Sure. Try Marlo's "Streamlined 21 Card Trick" (The Cardician p. 134), or, in my opinion one of the best, Marlo's "Nouveau 21 Card Trick" in Marlo Without Tears, p, 146. The intro to that description (by Jon Racherbaumer) mentions others. I sometimes do a tongue-in-cheek version, ...

Re: Tradeshow suggestions wanted!

John
Why not play with the well-known lines:

Oh, what a tangled Web we weave,
when first we practice to deceive.

Perhaps it can be a theme, or running phrase that ties the web and magic together.
Just a thought.

Re: Mel Gibson interested in magic?

Paul
Jeff's dad is Art Altman, of Altman Trap fame (and the Art Altman false shuffle, in the Marlo Magazine).

Marlo often spoke with great admiration of Art Altman, and from the few written contributions by Art, I can see why. Jeff has inherited some good chops himself.

Any trepidation about trying to memorize a deck is vastly overdone. There are several effective, valid and easy memory tools available, and you shouldn't be fearful just because the task initially sounds daunting . It's not, and it doesn't take a super-power memory, or a great brain. All it takes is...

Re: Who is this Paris Street Magician?

I had the pleasure of meeting and watching Bebel perform at Escorial last year, and he was great. He has a smoothness to his handling, and a casual rhythm that is very disarming. Wonderful plots, that clearly show how much he performs for lay audiences. I was told that a book of Bebel's magic is in ...

Re: Eddie Fields died at age 86

I knew Eddie Fields since 1965, when I first saw him perform two-person mentalism with "Professor" George Martz, in the Chicago Woolworth store. Their demonstration was done as a prelude to the sale of horoscopes -- and I cannot overestimate the inspiration that act gave me. Eddie and Geor...
