Re: Building my own props!

Hi! Great to hear about people building props. I'm just entering into doing that too. While the plan is to build larger props (I'm thinking a halloween Pepper's Ghost), I'm currently making some of the ones Blackstone described. We should keep this thread or topic open for people to collaborate on t...

Re: WHY THE GENERAL INDIFFERENCE TO MAGIC HISTORY?

Hi

The previous post attributed to David Mitchell was actually posted by me...I'm posting this as a test because...I hope not...but there may be another glitch in the system. Certainly wouldn't do if people were able to post under another name.

This post should read from Sir Ross

Re: WHY THE GENERAL INDIFFERENCE TO MAGIC HISTORY?

Hi All, Now that I am re-registered, I'd love to post a fast reply to the absolutely wonderful replies and threads. This is a great and thoughtful set of posts. Using the cups and balls example, Eric makes a good point that the Eygptians may not have depicited that. Also, the idea of using cups and ...

Re: WHY THE GENERAL INDIFFERENCE TO MAGIC HISTORY?

Nice point about religion Jonathan. While a valid historical topic, there is way too much baggage around it. I was trying to tread somewhat gently as you could no doubt tell. I like your "Chthulu" and think I may be talking about them in the future. ;-) It is interesting that discussing sp...

Re: WHY THE GENERAL INDIFFERENCE TO MAGIC HISTORY?

Hi again...you'll have to forgive my mis-spellings...SpellCheck in the new Forum...Richard? Please ;-) In the short reading of the text I mentioned in my previous post, the author is trying to get at the why behind magic. He is refering to a more religious application of magic and not necessarily th...

Re: WHY THE GENERAL INDIFFERENCE TO MAGIC HISTORY?

Great replies! The point "induce confidence in the shaman, who performs a useful role in his society through other skills such as herbal medicine and group psychology" is very well taken. It is for that reason I believe magic came into being (other than the obvious coolness of it all). The...

Re: WHY THE GENERAL INDIFFERENCE TO MAGIC HISTORY?

Hi All, I hope people are still reading this thread when I post this. I have only recently become very, very interested in the history of magic. I am educated both undergrad and graudate school as a philosopher...not the "I am channelling the spirit of the gibbon named Maurice through a crystal...

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE FUTURE OF THE FORUM: SUBSCRIBERS ONLY STARTING NEXT WEEK

Hi Everyone, I was surprised to see the post from Richard. After some initial confusion and reading the various posts, I'd think I can give an opinion. I understand the vast amount of work it takes to a) run a web forum and b) run a niche market magazine. I had done both before and magazines are ver...

Erdnase - Expert at the Card Table DVD

Hi and happy holidays to everyone! I was wondering if anyone had reviewed or had comment on the following DVD: Artifice, Ruse and Subterfuge: Expert At The Card Table 7 DVD Series by Wesley James & Simon Lovell I live in a city without a magic shoppe, so I purchase from afar with routine orders....

Re: Anyone from Ontario, Canada?

WOW! Thanks. I had no idea. I've ben missing WAY TOO much that's locally happening! I am VERY glad you are filling me in. Thanks. Now comes the BIG question...is there a mailing list or any suggestions to how to keep informed of these goings on? (I feel like I've lived in a cave now that I realize t...

Re: Anyone from Ontario, Canada?

Thanks! I just took a quick look at the website and will contact and hopefully avail myself of the group's kindness come autumn when regular meetings resume. Is there anything happening over the summer? In the years, I've lived in Ottawa I've never seen a magic show - save when Copperfield came to t...

Magic Shows - Eric DeCamps & NYC

I flew into Manhattan from Canada last Sunday and saw the premiere of an Evening of Intimate Magic with Eric DeCamps. I highly recommend the performance to everyone who can get to it. It is running for a limited engagement and seating is intimate. Patrick Page was also in New York that week. Althoug...

Re: Being a Good Spectator

Great topic! This is a story with a moral that relates to the situation you describe..although somewhat different circumstances. Last year, almost to the day I was at a convention in Florida at Disney World and there was a magician performing throughout the day. He and I spoke for awhile and a woman...

Re: BAD BAD BAD

How ironic that in this month's Genii, plagarism is one of the editorial topics. Someone posted that this looked like it was from a UK dvd. Certainly the wooden statue thing on both the DVD and on the desk look alike. If that's the case, it's straight out theft. In Canada it is a crime to share or s...

Re: Mathematical Principle

For those interested in more mathematical 'magic.' This website has some interesting math info. Just before the entry on Martin J. Kruskal (Kruskal Count), there's a link to a PDF article on another such trick from a mathematician. (written by Michael Kleber) <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http...

Re: Milk Jug - what can I use instead of milk????

Perhaps skim milk could address your needs. It's basically white water. :-)

However, if your props are made for milk work, then it's more than likely you won't damage them if you use milk. So go ahead and try the real thing. Good Luck!

Re: Card Palming

Thanks Everyone! "Bend the Hell Out of It" made me laugh. Good advice about relaxing with time and experience, as well as bend back the other way through shuffles!

Thanks again

Card Palming

I've been working on card magic for abit now; started with self-working tricks and have begun advancing through Royal Road. A challenge I've found is to palm a card without bending the heck out of it. I have smallish hands and tend to bend the card in my palm so it's not visible to the spectator. Ho...
