Re: Owner of Grasso's Magic Theatre arrested

One more thing, the girl is not the only victim. Joe's family are victims too. Joe's son is M****** G***** and from what I've seen he is a fantastic magician. He will suffer for years. When you unnecessarily include a different magician's name in a thread about ped*philes, particularly on a highly-...

Re: I Join Those Banned from The Magic Cafe

I was banned for pointing out that someone was selling photocopies of magic books, and that instead of deleting the listing, the Cafe mods were violating their own policy by leaving it intact and deleting posts from multiple users pointing out that violation.

Re: Ricky Jay on The Tonight Show March 31

A small correction: yes the book is huge, around 355 pages--but it's not an encyclopedia. My intention was not to reprint every routine, it was to print just the really good routines and ideas and to present them in a logical order with analysis and history thrown in. However, there is an extensive...

Re: Book writing methodology

Richard, you clearly have a preference for the large 9"x12" hardcover book format, but how did you arrive at that preference? I look at my shelves and see only a handful of single-magician books in that format prior to you establishing it as a standard -- the Kosky and Carlyle books, the T...

Re: If You Want to Compete at FISM in 2015, Please Read This

Oops, I was confused by the early talk of FISM itself being aboard a ship...

So the European FISM qualifying competitions are (possibly) taking place on a boat, and the boat's constraints would limit the Euro acts that can move on to dry-earth FISM proper?

There are rumours that illusion acts, acts using pyrotechnics and acts using animals will be unable to compete in the stage competition, owing to ship's regulations and space. While there was an early notion of FISM 2015 aboard a ship, isn't it actually happening on dry land? The FISMItaly2015.com ...

Re: Bently by Chris Hanowell

Your rhetorical tactics might be appropriate in a debate club, where the goal is simply to win. If you'd like to engage with others to analyze, sift and winnow in an effort to find truth, you might consider an alternate mode of discourse, lest those others walk away. I've watched others here walk aw...

Re: Bently by Chris Hanowell

Sorry, I don't care for your style of argument. Characterizing the examples I offered as "the only examples you can find" is overstated. Leaping to a position that I would advocate the ball flying all over the stage because "more visual is more better" is both grammatically insul...

Er, I don't think there's a wider brush than your extremely broad claim that "visual magic is weak." Again using Teller, would the goldfish climax to his Miser's Dream be stronger if the tank were covered with a cloth? I'm glad you refined your claim. That's mostly what I was after, since ...

Re: Bently by Chris Hanowell

visual magic is weak. It does not require the participation of the audiences imagination. They either accept it or not. the trick would be better if the clip were under a cloth and the audience saw the cloth moved. Really? Is Zombie improved by the cloth in front of it? Re: Jeff Busby Passes Away

Busby's business practices made for lively, colorful reading in the "Bull" column of Richard's Almanac.

Was that positive enough for your quaint cultural tradition of turning a blind eye to -- and even seeking to silence -- the still-living people who were (and still remain) wronged?
