Memoirs of a Magic Dealer

Just read Al Cohen's column in the December issue.I never realized how much involvement there is in getting suppliers for effects that become the shop's best sellers. And that story about the woodworker sending three huge boxes of junk was hilarious. Another fascinating insight into the world of bric...

Re: Why You Should Subscribe to Genii if You Want Us To Stay in Business

I do believe that newspapers and news orientated mags like "Time" will be under intense pressure to survive. This is because most people only read one or two paragraphs of the on-line news. To sit and try reading significant amounts of text on-line off a screen is uncomfortable and hard on...

Re: Trying to contact Steve Draun

That's the correct e-mail address. I don't think he checks his emails often. I ordered Bertini's Coin DVD from him and it took 3 months to get it. My emails about the status went unanswered.

Maybe someone on the forum knows him personally and can help you.

Re: Losander Needs Our Help

I agree Kent. I just sent him an order for some effects I have been delaying on. I purchased one of his floating tables with the anti-gravity box two years ago and it is my favorite effect. As Darren Romeo says "Dirk's Floating Table reminds me of why I became a magician, why we do magic."...

Re: Head Genii Performs and Talks

I'll second Bill Wells take on the "Phoenix Aces". Don't know where Richard has the time to keep this effect competitive. I also liked the Krenzel Gun trick. From the Q&A session, I learned a lot about the details of publishing a magazine and also about producing a worthwhile magic DVD...

Re: Houdini Still Isn't Dead

Thanks Terry

So it looks like (at least in KY) anyone who applies for a permit with the blessing of all next of kin. But "next of kin" is such a broad category, it makes one wonder what a legal definition of this would be.

Re: Houdini Still Isn't Dead

I realize this is nothing more than a publicity stunt but it does beg the question as to who has the authority to exhume the body--a state or county prosecutor, a relative, an executor, some combination of law enforcement and estate people?? Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

Then I guess I am not understanding what Tom wrote earlier:
That's also my problem such that I asked for a clarification on earlier. From Tom's explanation it is not clear whether the spectator tells Marc Paul the number he is thinking of, before the show.

Tom,

In your explanation do McCutcheon and Parkinson inform Paul what card and number they will say when the show is on? If they do, then they shouldn't be impressed at all. What do you think?

It might "almost force" you to think that, but you'd be wrong. Both Richard and I have been on the receiving end of the trick done by David Berglas himself, and believe me, it is a shocker! Matt, Not questioning Berglas performing it since I haven't been fortunate to see it. But in this o...

Re: Looking for a GOOD ACAAN

While recommending that the Berglas ACAAN is the best may be correct, reading his book to master it may not be practical. Not because it isn't there but because it will probably cost you over $400.The latest sale on ebay just last week went for over $400.

The only really interesting thing about it is that there are no bidders!
It seems probable this is a scam. The seller from Fargo ND has no rating with all zeros on the feedback chart. I think even neophytes would fear to tread here especially with a staring cost of $90.

Al Cohen's column is the first thing I look for when I receive Genii in the mail. I miss his shop, the characters that he writes about, watching Al perform and the carmaradie of all the people who visited. It was something I never took for granted because I knew I would miss it when he retired.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I did see some of the earlier bulldog switching devices but the one used by Chris seemed different. He hardly touched it. It may be the same device with better handling. I'll revisit the earlier bulldog clips and see if I can work out a similiar handling.
