Therefore, I'd bet money he read the cheating books of the day including Green's various (but all similar) works, Evans' How Gamblers Win, Sharps and Flats, Fools of Fortune and the various chapters on cheating that appear in many of the otherwise pedestrian poker books of the late 19th century. I've just ordered this book and can't wait to read it. As someone who's slowly working his way through The Expert at the Card Table , I'm sure David's experience and insight will be invaluable to me. For that, I'm willing to pay high shipping charges. :D I remember watching David demo some of these ...

Re: Magic in BoingBoing

Yep, this post isn't very classy. I would have at least liked to have seen a performance of the trick with a link to how you can make one.

Yes, I agree. Looking through all of his posts, he's treading a thin line between sharing his passion for magic and exposure.

Yes, roughing fluid, or any kind of re-positionable glue or double-sided stick tape. In fact, I usually just use a small ball of Blue Tac because there's loads of it around me at work, and you can remove it easily. You could also use Beeswax, Magician's Wax, or Chap Stick to perform most of the tric...

LOL. Maybe not a great idea, unless you enjoy suffering from lead poisoning! Your comment has reminded me that I need to add a list of modern-day substitutes for Diachylon to that chapter.

Re: History of Encyclopedia of Card Tricks

All the chapters of the book are now available. I'm now slowly going through each chapter and fixing any issues, adding images, updating credits, and so on. I'm also rating the tricks, and adding some brief notes on each effect. I'll also be adding the cross index by Howard Lyons that Bob kindly sen...

Re: Magic in BoingBoing

@P.T. Widdle, that's how I feel too. The BoingBoing articles are not exposure, unlike some of the content on YT. Also, the readers of the blog tend to be alternative/geeky/techy types. The sort of people that are attracted to magic as a hobby. I don't think the YT issue is separate. The real issue h...

Re: Magic in BoingBoing

However, if someone looks up the secret of a trick because they were so stunned by it (and they DO do this very frequently) it takes them some effort to find out what they want to know. That effort will result in the knowledge being retained and probably imparted to someone else who shouldn't know ...

Re: Magic in BoingBoing

Alexa is worked out by people stupid enough to install stupid toolbars on their browsers. This is true, but it is still one of the most accurate ratings we can easily get of a website's popularity, albeit a very approx. one (like Nielsen TV ratings). My point was that, although a lot of people will...

Re: Magic in BoingBoing

Although we should worry about negative exposure, I think these posts are fairly positive and will lead to a greater interest in magic by some of the regular readers of BoingBoing. The Alexa ranking for BoingBoing is currently 11, 014, 223. Compare this to YouTube, which is at number 3. So, I'd be m...

Hi All, I'm trying to write a potted history of this infamous book to add to an online ebook edition I'm creating (with added notes and detailed credits). Hi Edwin,

I'm glad you've found the posts useful. It really is a great convention and because it is smaller than other events, you're able to be more sociable. I look forward to meeting you there next year ;).

All the best,

Re: Tenyo for Girls

the issue is deeper than colors and kittens. Hey Brad, I'm certainly not disagreeing with you. The under-representation of women in magic, especially close-up, is a complex problem and is not going to be solved by simply making more tricks pink. However, I do think this is part of the solution. Eve...

Re: Tenyo for Girls

I have nothing against pink - but it's not a color which makes someone want to engage with magic. No, but it does help get tricks into the hands of young girls, especially if you're like my 2 year old niece and obsessed with anything pink. The simple fact of the matter is that the blue and pink ais...

Hi El Mystico, Well, you may be right, I don't have any hard empirical evidence to suggest these problems are significant. But I do not think these are false problems.
