Houdini lecture in Seal Beach (Aug 15)

On August 15th I will be presenting my "Houdini in Hollywood" lecture at IBM Ring 96 in Seal Beach, CA. This will be a "mega lecture" (with intermission) featuring all the clips I've only selectively shared at past talks. I will also be showing 10 minutes of footage from TCM's ne...

Houdini's Milk Can to be used in one-time only performance

This is pretty cool. Houdini's famous Milk Can escape will be performed by Joseph Patire at the upcoming Midwest Magic History Weekend in Marshall, Michigan (May 28-30), using the original Houdini-Hardeen Milk Can from the collection the American Museum of Magic. The escape will take place 70 years ...

Re: TCM Film Festival - The Grim Game

I think you'll see a big difference in this one, Richard. I've always felt bad for general audiences who come to a Houdini movie out of curiosity and fun and find themselves having to sit through The Man From Beyond or Haldane . I've seen audiences just deflate during these, and I can't blame them. ...

Re: TCM Film Festival - The Grim Game

Yes, let's discuss the film and completely ignore the acting ability of its star, and the only reason it was made in the first place. Well, I didn't say completely ignore it. I gave my own opinion on it above, and I addressed it in my review. I just don't think anyone, then or now, goes to see a Ho...

Re: TCM Film Festival - The Grim Game

I think Houdini's acting got worse as he went along and started to study the craft. He studied himself stiff. He was much better in the early movies because he's just being natural. The Grim Game, being his second film, is perfect. He still has all that early naturalness, but he's had experience. He...

Rick told me the restoration was done by late Nov and the plan was always to premiere it at the TCM Festival. The original announcement was supposed to come in Nov/Dec.
