The appeal of magic

There's something about walking through a wall, vanishing a jet that appeals. The bigger the better it would seem. Unlike the stroke of a pen which made a planet vanish from our language, the wave of a cloth that makes a person disappear intrigues audiences. Going back a ways there's an idea called ...

Here's a link for the image of the cube created by implicit continuity. https://patternsthatconnext.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/seeing-different-things-whilst-seeing-the-same-thing/ There was a TED talk where this the Necker cube illustration was used to show that two more ways of seeing the cube are p...

Re: continuity and narrative

The perceptual and cognitive psych folks have a term and model that looks directly applicable to magic - beyond attention or change blindness - "a perception field" that establishes and maintains a sense of continuity to a model of reality. Using that model; what of things which do change ...

Re: continuity and narrative

There's a beautiful example of continuity in action to make images using circles and the corners of a cube. For want of a link to that image - here's simpler example the Kaniza Square: Seeing 3D in 2D [Key Stages 2-4] where a sense of continuity adds edges and a boundry for us. Where some see a puzz...

continuity and narrative

There's been some recent popular discussion of perception and integrating perceptions in a visual continuity field . A patchwork of perceptions used to construct a workable visual model. What then comes of noticed change within the continuity? Dare we say narrative? http://books.google.com/books?id=...

This came to mind: http://www.ep.tc/realist/15/03.html after being amused by this: http://boingboing.net/2014/04/17/[censored].html never mind the delightful commentary at the cafe about how nonconstructive (or unhelpful?) yours truly may seem for pointing out prior art and context in our literature.

Re: How many ways can you arrange a deck of cards?

It's simpler to imagine fifty two slots. Each takes one card. The card can be any of the available unassigned cards from the working pack, our universe of discourse. The pack is 'arranged' when all fifty two cards have been put in slots. I think we're good with the count of such arrangements. As dis...

Let's say the audience imagines the boxes are elastic - they are not fooled as they have some sufficient explanation to work with. Presentation is its own thing. if a trick works as magic - it works. A set of prop boxes that only we know are made of solid materials and so don't expand or contract... is a gag. In this case a very well designed gag.
