Re: Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show in April

Craig Mitchell,

The dates for the 2015 Awards Show have not been set, and won't be until after this year's Awards Show. But they will almost certainly be in late March or early April. Is there a particular reason you want to know?

Re: Stephen Hobbs' Labyrinth Magazine

One of the reasons Hobbs is unlikely to reprint Labyrinth as a book is because a lot of the material was from Steve Mayhew, and later this year Stephen Minch (that's three Steves in one sentence!) is scheduled to publish a compilation of Steve Mayhew's card magic. (I compiled/wrote this book). Of co...

Re: Do you agree with Tamariz?

Interestingly enough, in "Deceptive Practice" the documentary about Ricky Jay, Ricky says almost the opposite. Don't have an exact quote, but he says he likes books but the only (or best) way to learn magic is one on one from a mentor.

Just over a week away from the 45th Annual AMA Awards Show. Re: 2012 In Review

Richard, I have to get one more point off my chest. Even artists who only work on Broadway stopped believing that 20 years ...

Re: "too perfect" theory

"Too perfect" overlaps often with "too impossible", and discussions of too impossible are amusing for the same reasons. Can there be degrees of impossibility? Isn't it a binary proposition?

Re: "too perfect" theory

I'm not certain if you're critical of the way Johnsson articulates the theory through his examples, or if you simply don't comprehend how the theory can be applied to other effects. Johnsson himself didn't comprehend how to apply the theory to other effects... because there is no theory. The ONLY i...

Re: "too perfect" theory

Re: "too perfect" theory

This is what I learned by reading Johnsson's essay. There is nothing "muddling" nor "contradictory" about any of this.

All of what you quote is just the introduction. NONE of that are elements of his (contradictory) "theory".

Re: "too perfect" theory

How is that card effect not perfect enough? If you keep reading in the essay, you will see exactly why that card effect isn't perfect enough. Because of the structure it's obvious that all the cards are the same, and the spectator figured it out. THAT'S how it's not perfect enough. If you could pro...

Re: "too perfect" theory

To me, the issue was never "too perfect" - it was always "too obvious". I've always said the same thing. Rick Johnsson's original essay is a muddled contradictory bunch of ideas. In every one of his examples, the trick is never "too perfect" it is always not perfect en...

Re: The Berglas Effect

Given a fixed deck size, the first choice would be 24/48, the second would be 23/47, the third 22/46,..., the last choice would be 1/25.

The last card (like every one before) is a fifty-fifty shot. How can you say the last choice would be 1/25?

Re: The Berglas Effect

No. 52 decks would do it, because each deck covers 52 possibilities. Therefore 52 decks would cover all 2704 (52*52) possibilities. Imagine the first deck is in new deck order. For the second deck move just one card from the bottom to the top, for the third deck move the two cards from the bottom to...

For a long time I thought the probability of ACAAN was 1/52*52, but then I had a Ph.D. genius friend of mine explain it to me.
