Re: prominent blog praises Sleights of Mind

My thinking is much in line with Michael, so I will also stop reiterating the same argument, except to note that we should set our expectations appropriately with regards to what hard science can successfully "explain". Science in general, and neuroscience in particular, are reductionist b...

Re: prominent blog praises Sleights of Mind

Our displeasure at Sleights of Mind has nothing to do with the few tricks revealed. It has to do with the fact that these scientists are imposing nonsense neuroscience "facts" about what we do in a book that laymen who don't know any better will read. Magic is not about neuroscience. It i...

Re: prominent blog praises Sleights of Mind

I'm a bit surprised and saddened to see this backlash against the book on this forum and in the comments sections of Boing Boing and other blogs. I think they come across as petty and do magic a disservice. As an (amateur) magician and a full-fledged (former) neuroscientist, I think the book is not ...

Re: Eric Jones impromptu moment August 2011 You Tube

Ok, I understand what the transferring of 7cards procedure accomplishes. I guess the reason I don't like it and am hesitant to use it is that, out of the whole effect, it's the only procedure that "reads" like the only reason it's there is to make the trick work. I'm trying to look at the ...

Re: Eric Jones impromptu moment August 2011 You Tube

Got it, thanks! So the transferring procedure accommodates for different spectators having different numbers of pieces in their hands. But will it work if spectators are allowed to choose how many pieces to exchange with each other? That would be amazing, if I could say "you can pass either 1, ...

Re: Eric Jones impromptu moment August 2011 You Tube

Amazing. I was on the fence about buying Woody's book, and this performance convinced me. The trick is just... you will do it to yourself and be fooled, how often does that happen? ;) For the math inclined (which I am not), in the description in the book, just before the down-under deal, Woody has y...

Re: Theory11s New T&R // Restored by Lloyd Barnes

I always thought that a torn and restored plot would make sense in the context of Tommy Wonder's Deja Reverse routine, to restore the second spectator's card after the reveal. Is there any work in that direction?

Re: New Book Coming: Sleights of Mind

I think the focus of the authors is not to explain how magic works through cognitive devices, but how our minds work, using magic effects as starting points. In their book they start from a magic effect, but really spend the majority of time and effort talking about how the brain processes informati...

Re: New Book Coming: Sleights of Mind

I just started reading an advance copy of this book this morning. It's too soon for me to give a review of any sort, but so far the thrust of the book seems to be this: visual illusions can give us clues about how the human visual system works by pointing out where the system "breaks". Sim...

Re: close up problem

Hi WJ, Have you thought about not fighting it? My hands often shake noticeably when I perform (although not if I perform for children, strangely), and I found it works well to incorporate it into my performing persona, rather than trying to hide it. I come across as a nervous and slightly under-prac...

Re: Misdirection and the Mind

I am a scientist with a strong interest in magic (or a magician with a strong background in science, take your pick), and have been thinking about how to talk about the science of magic in an accessible and interesting way that won't become about exposing methods, but about exposing psychological ph...

Re: Misdirection and the Mind

How about the very old bit where you instruct everyone to follow your lead and cross their arms, thumbs pointing down, and intertwine their fingers? Then show that they are all locked in place like that, while you're able to twist your arms back to a straight position. I'm sure you know what I'm tal...

Re: 2 card/ 3 card monte

Mmmm... it might make more sense to go the other way around. "Maybe using three cards is too confusing. Here, I'll make it more fair, I'll get rid of one..." However, it seems redundant to me. Pick one or the other, and maybe do something else of a conman nature, like the shell game, or th...

Re: the "pop" in decks

I've always thought that it is cold temperatures that warp decks in that way. Leaving a deck of cards sitting outside of the box on a chilly day will make them "pop".

Re: Name of card trick?

Yes, it definitely is Title Bout, on Easy to Master Card Miracles vol. 3. Although the handling taught there is easier, as it befits a course aimed at beginners, the effect is really quite strong. I find it to be a very nice trick for when someone in the audience goes: "I wouldn't want to play ...

Re: Android by Jay Crowe

This strikes me as a terrible concept for a trick, actually... Most people today (and the adolescent target audience for sure) are aware of automated text message responding systems. You can send a text message to GOOGLE with your area code, and get back a list of movies playing near you. You can ev...

Re: THE BEST EXECUTER OF THE TWO HANDED SHIFT

Richard: He didn't say what the actual word was, I assume you're correct. Chad felt sheepish enough saying "damn" because there was an 11 year old kid (or thereabout) present... I wish I could convey how great it looked in Chad's hands, with his genuine expression of frustration and his wh...

The "Oh, Damn" pass (although he admitted that when working in nightclubs he would use a different word) consists of pretending to spill some cards from the deck to the table, except you spill only the top packet. Look frustrated and mutter the expletive, convincingly. Pick up the cards fr...

Re: THE BEST EXECUTER OF THE TWO HANDED SHIFT

Two nights ago, at his lecture, Chad Long graciously demonstrated not only the [censored] pass, but also the golf swing pass, and the "oh, damn!" pass. All very enjoyable, especially the last one. Then he concluded by saying: "Or, you could learn a real pass". :)

I love the guy!

Nature Neuroscience article on magic

Nature Neuroscience just published an article titled: "Attention and awareness in stage magic: turning tricks into research". The list of co-authors reads like a who's who of magic: Mac King, James Randi, Apollo Robbins, Teller, John Thompson. Luckily, they've put the article up for free i...
