Re: Blaine at New York Public Library, Monday

I attended and enjoyed the talk last night. To me David Blaine came off as authentic and likable. He told a few stories from his childhood, including how he was first introduced to magic by a librarian at the Brooklyn public library, where Blaine would spend time after school while his single mom wa...

Re: Wired: Women In Magic

Hard to teach sponge balls or any routines that require pockets when the girls in my magic club are all wearing leggings. :?

However, a simple mentalism code routine (red, white, blue) went over well with them. They like learning tricks together.

PS - The sponge balls were not pink.

Kind of a weird unboxing - just showing the apparatus and packaging. No exposure, but also only hints at what the effects are. A longer version with demos of the tricks might of have been more interesting for the lay viewer, maybe not.

Re: Wired: Women In Magic

Since it has opened the door to many women participating in poker, is there a trickle over into card magic? I'm surprised no one has ventured an answer to your very good question, or ...

Re: Wired: Women In Magic

Submariner, your point of view is sensible, especially for a parent (like myself). Moving on from the discussion of pink, I'd like to look at suggestions on ways magic could be introduced to girls beyond what's currently available. In addition to the Wired article, I'm thinking of this because I am ...

Re: Wired: Women In Magic

The "pink" thing is mostly aimed at girls. True. Except for the NFL. My wife was horrified by the use of pink in their relatively recent marketing efforts to women. And she's also disturbed by the way pink has been co-opted for breast cancer awareness. One thing I do find fascinating is t...

Re: Wired: Women In Magic

I guess this "marketing ploy" has been very effective for many years. I'm 50+ now and almost all of the women I know LOVE buying almost anything in pink. They think it's great they can buy gardening tools, kitchen appliances, hardware products in their favourite colour now. That's funny. ...

Re: Wired: Women In Magic

Re: Wired: Women In Magic

How can there be anything wrong with that? It may surprise you that there are people who do believe there is indeed something wrong with perpetuating the stereotype that pink and purple means it's for girls. Lego Friends is another example. Fred Willard performs Coloring Book

On an episode of the one-season HBO show, Family Tree, Fred Willard's character performs the Coloring Book on a couch for friends. You can see the difference right away between a d*ck like Jimmy Kimmel and someone with talent who knows how to do a good nighttime TV show like Jimmy Fallon.
