Re: Things of magical interest in New York

The suggestions for magic events are all spot on. It's great you found them and shared them here. And yes, it's true, the 3 Card Monte has disappeared. I haven't seen those guys - and I enjoyed watching - in at least a decade. The last hustle I saw was a guy in Stockholm during FISM - right near the...

Re: Joanie Spina 1953-2014

Sad indeed. She is a great loss to us and to those who will not have the opportunity of her mentoring. Those of us who saw her talk and mentoring at MAGIC Live were privileged to witness her brilliance. And we mustn't let David Oliver's original post get lost so I am placing the link to his thread h...

Re: New Series of Master of Magic Starts August 1 (CW Networ

By the way, in the New York area, this half hour show is followed by "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and then - at 9 pm - "Penn & Teller Fool Us". (This is a broadcast - non-cable - repeat of the show which originally aired in the UK.)

Re: The Oldest Trick in the Book by Bob Read

Teller was in Newark Airport today and we had a brief chat. However, that was before I read these posts; I would've liked getting his take on it.

The story of Teller's visit to Bob Read's and using cups from Bob's collection is a classic.

Re: Jeff Altman on Letterman

Doug, you'll appreciate this: A friend of mine correctly observed that Jeff Altman has three things in common with Johnny Carson. He is a comedian, magician, and an accomplished drummer as well. Cool point, sir! Thanks, Dustin. David Letterman, who probably never got a magic kit as a kid - which mi...

Re: Jeff Altman on Letterman

David Letterman has more recently become more amenable (is that the word I'm looking for?) to magicians, but last night the wiseguy David Letterman roared. It was annoying --- but he knew he could push it as far as he did because he and Jeff Altman are old friends. Mr. Altman took it in stride. It w...

Well, it is tape-delayed on the West Coast, so that's what I was thinking about. No matter...there's not much activity besides you and me on this thread anyway, Richard. :D
Congratulations to Mr. Harris.

Neil was great (and I won't reveal who won with respect to those in other time zones).
Towards the end of the show there was a neat trailer for Woody Allen's "Magic in the Moonlight".

Re: Seminar with the Fat Brothers

I checked with the convention registrar and here's the reply:

It looks like they will be charging 50 for this. I believe they will have a booth in the dealers' room and will be collecting the fee themselves. This is not through the convention.

Re: Another History Question: Penn & Teller Truck Stunt

Ray, your memory - in this case - is fine. I worked at Radio City Music Hall and watched the truck bit filmed on a Sunday night, so that jives with 9/2/90. The program aired in November. If it was the 23rd, that was the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The first illusion is the seating chart. The "balcony" is merely the last row in the sloped seating. But it might be a great perspective before your second viewing. You will not meet your demise. Have fun.

Re: The Incredibly Stinky Burt Wonderstone?

There is a short (8 - 9 minutes) extra on the Burt Wonderstone DVD. It features David Copperfield talking about his involvement with the film including a clip of his crew performing a rough cut version of the hangman illusion on David's MGM stage. And then there are a few outtakes and some fun bits:...

Re: New Blaine Special

I thought it was a great show. Using well-known people (I think the word "celebrity" has lost true meaning) was a nice touch. (PK pun implied.) David did use a few well-known magic effects and made them work in his inimitable way. (I wonder if Simon Aronson smiled at the Stephen Hawking se...

Re: Hofzinser book by Magic Christian

Hermetic Press has always published great books; the sample looks beautiful. I am curious about the choice to put so many surnames in all capital letters (HOFZINSER, eg, et al). It seems distracting. Is that the case in the original?
