Re: Morgan Fairchild performs the Bullet Catch Illusion

Morgan Fairchild did it for me.
Pretty sure she was on a Copperfield special too.
Is that why I got into magic? Hmmm....

"just passing through is, if I remember correctly, a version of an older trick that was not misled. the creator mentioned it in the instructions. " So, yes, as Brad's review makes clear, the older trick was Wenk's Misled. Brad also says "the misled gimmick even if permanently attached ...

Re: Half Half Man ... Your Thoughts?

I don't recall seeing Alex writing that his count could not be used without his permission. So I don't see why you felt the need to ask for it. However; here is an interesting aspect of the discussion: I recently saw a well-known and well-respected magician perform his variation of an established ef...

Re: Half Half Man ... Your Thoughts?

Not surprised Alex was 'surprised'. Like I said; the assumption is, if it is published, it is there to be used, unless otherwise stated.

Your line "I have no reason to believe I use it against anyone's will" covers this whole area pefectly.

Re: Half Half Man ... Your Thoughts?

Seems clear enough to me; the majority of magic books are published so other magicians can use the routines. Here is a publication that lays restrictions on this. It isn't the first. I think if you discovered these restrictions only after buying it, you'd be right to be annoyed, but it seems here th...

Wenk's Misled

I've just dug out Misled. In the instructions he says that "a very well known...very prolific... figure in the magic world...widely recognised as a genius...is claiming that his creativity suddenly extends backwards in time". Anyone know what the story behind this is? Also, I note in his i...

Re: Card Tricks for a Work Meeting

My advice is - do something you know inside out.
The circumstances will be strange for you; you'll need to maintain control over two different audiences. So you don't want to be adding the effort of remembering details of a new routine.

Re: It takes a lot to surprise David Berglas ...

Joe: You say "Dynamo is not really a magician. He just plays one on TV." I suspect you are referencing Robert-Houdin's line, "The conjurer is an actor playing the part of a magician." In which case, surely you'd agree that Dynamo fits Robert-Houdin's description. Recently I've be...

Re: New book: The Vernon Companion

Much as I admire David Ben and Lewis Ganson, I have to disagree with the idea that "Vernon is important...simply because he thought about magic more than any other person in the history of the art/craft." I am pretty damn sure that if I'd had the same opportunity to think about magic, I'd ...

Re: Magic in the Moonlight

I loved it. But then I love Woody. No blockbusters, but always watchable, always, for me, better than the majority of Hollywood films (oh, I'm looking forward to next year's Star Wars and Bourne films; but very few films hit the Woody spot). I came out thinking - i wish this team had made a remake o...

Re: Credits in Royal Road To Card Magic

re: CO Williams Card To Pocket; it is worth tracking down the original write up, in Hoffman's Magical Titbits. Hugard and Braue introduced a few complications, and in trying to cover a palm with misdirection, added an illogicality.

Re: Alan Alan R.I.P.

I knew Alan only as the slightly odd-looking magic shop owner. But, for a period in the 1980s, I worked a ten minute walk from his shop, and loved to visit it. In the pre-internet age, it was a Mecca for me. Sure he knew the importance of gags for the passing tourists - the buzzer, the pin through h...

Re: The Professor

Oh! Thank you so much for posting that!
It's funny; it's a bit like Malini talking about "It's the eye"; when you are a beginner it is meaningless; but after many hours of thinking and practise, it starts to makes sense! (And in this case, the Genii column helps!)

Re: Steal these Cervon Castle Notebooks again!

This is funny. Credits? Sure - no-one held these as more than Bruce's recollections of the credits. Annotations? Sure - no doubt the majority of magicians would require extensive annotations. But - these were Bruce's personal notebooks. So, weren't intended to meet either of these criteria. Understa...

Slydini's Imp Pass, Slydini Switch, and Guyatt
