Ken's Magic Shop Closed

I forgot to mention that Ken's Magic Shop in Fairlawn, NJ closed a few weeks back. I think that's the last magic shop around here.

Re: Many Doug Henning Photos (Houdini & more)

Many years ago, they used to have have a annual sale. They would dump huge piles of ephemera they didn't want on tables in area about the size of a basketball court. It was amazing the things one could find. One item that was located was a signed Houdini photo for $1.00. SMH

Re: Sperber Auction this Saturday!

Another fine selection of magic. If you collect magic, there probably is something there for you. As for the catalog, it's a must for any magic historian as a reference.

Eagerly Waiting For Dustin's Yearly Forum Round-Up

I am anxiously waiting for Dustin to post his yearly Genii Forum Round-Up. To tell you the truth, I rather read his post than finding a new piece of Houdini for the collection. And that's saying something. :o

Re: Another change on Ebay.

I think there is still a very old law that's still on the books that a seller must accept US legal tender. It may also state that if it is not accepted, the item is perceived free after an attempt to pay.

I might fuzzy on this last part, as this was when I was in the coin world 30+ years ago.

Re: Another change on Ebay.

By making Paypal, Ebay owned, the only method of payment, Ebay can tack on more fees. It's a win/win situation for them. For the ones that don't use Paypal, they are outweighed by people who are forced to.

Re: Another change on Ebay.

And so Ebay gets the maximum in fees is probably the most significant reason. What I would really like to know is that no one challenged Ebay in the USA in forcing most sellers to use Paypal(Another Ebay company and fee) to pay for items. This is not so in some European countries. On what basis did...

I think that's the way it has been for a few years. Ebay tries to limit direct contact with potential buyers or sellers.

Re: Alan J. Kanter poster auction

LOL! There is an alternative universe in the auction world. Unsold items can be purchased through the auction house many a time if you make an inquiry or read their rules about unsold lots.

Re: Alan J. Kanter poster auction

There wasn't a reserve on any poster, sort of. Using the equation above, by placing a high estimate on a piece, one could determine the lowest price acceptable for the seller to sell the item. So here we go: The poster is estimated at $40,000 - $50,000. The opening bid would be $20,000. Now there is...

Re: Alan J. Kanter poster auction

I think how it works is that the item will start, if there are no previous mail bids, at half of the low estimate. So an item with an estimate of $10,000-$15,000, would open at $5,000.

What still ticks me off is the 22% commission. Then 15-20% from the seller to kick in. That's a good gig for them.
