Re: Stewart James

I have one of the Stewart James books but I have to confess I have never done a single trick from it. Not the fault of the book, the author or the tricks. Just the fact that I have too many tricks already and I haven't the faintest idea what I am supposed to do with any more. However, I did pick up ...

Re: Ennobling Magic

mark. slydini has influence us all, but his approach to magic is inherently challenging and the fact that so few people can pull that off is proof enough that he is a bad example to emulate. the best students of slydini look and act nothing like him. Those who never grew past the stage of mimicry c...

Re: Ennobling Magic

I think I was lying about not lying. I just remembered that I will often babble to people before a trick starts that "I read this trick in a book this morning" or "I only learned this trick yesterday afternoon" when I have been doing the damn thing for about 40 years or so.

I find this interesting because this thread has made me go over my own work. For some odd reason I don't think I do much, if even any, lying at all when I perform. Fairy tales yes or deceptive practices yes. Or even white lies that the audience might even recognise as lies. Tongue in cheek false sta...

Re: The Jerx Year Three

I haven't read this great wisdom yet but it should be noted that Jean Hugard once pointed out that there are two kinds of misdirection. There is mental misdirection and physical misdirection. A good magician should know how to distract the mind as well as the eyes.

Re: The Jerx Year Three

I never judge a magician by the amount of professional work he does. You can still be a wonderful magician even if you don't get paid. The trouble is that I don't think the stuff he writes makes sense for unpaid performances either. Still, I haven't read his latest musings so I shall reserve judgeme...

In that case, then, perhaps RK in his solicitous mercy will ban self-avowed Infallibles from this board. I think this is true. People that read a lot tend to be good writers although I concede not in every case. It does come naturally to some people. I think Harry Lorayne's first book on memory became an immediate best seller. Of course in many cases people get to learn a bit about writing when they go...

This seems to be a good moment to draw everyone's attention to a splendid Paul Curry trick called "YOU'RE A LIAR" on page 110 of Bruce Elliott's book "Magic: 100 New Tricks". Curry recommends this for female audiences. I am not sure what the implication is. As for Randi I quite l...
