Re: No mention of latest magic act on AGT?

David and John are Moscow Art Theater artistes compared to this stuff. Really, normally I would say the Oliver clip is a clever satire, but it's just the straight up reality of the show. Just awful inserts and phony scripted dialogue and contrived settings for the material. Why can't they just trust...

Is it just me or has this show become unwatchable? I found tonight's show excruciating in the producer's shameless and cheesy emotional manipulation.

Re: No mention of latest magic act on AGT?

What do you do for a follow-up? Good point. Running out of "A" material before the finale afflicts many of the magicians on these contest shows. Watch the Derek Hughes interview in the most recent Reel Magic to hear his counter-intuitive solution to the problem...a really great interview ...

He didn't fool them (in any magic sense) he dazzled them, wowed them, showed them something they'd never seen before but 10 seconds looking at the online public comments shows that he didn't fool them. Re: America's Got Talent performance

I don't agree that in Tsai's case non-magicians are led to the method. I am not even convinced that magicians know the full method. Yes, magicians can probably speculate correctly on some of the principles used, but does anyone think they have a blow by blow account of what happened? I think there's...

Re: How to pronounce _____ ?

But even that example misses the point. It is common for a language to use words from another and to adapt them to the sound of the borrower's language; what is unique here (very unique?) is wanting to pronounce the word in some way that is imagined to be more authentically like the source language,...

I think Max Maven once said, perhaps with tongue in cheek, that even though the English word is pronounced ek-wi-voke, when using it in the conjuring sense, wouldn't it be nice to reserve the fake French pronunciation for the magical meaning.

This weekend, Reel Magic is offering a free weekend access to its archives. Re: Probability Question

If you want that exact order then of course 1 out of 15 factorial.

But if you don't care about the order within the suits, but do care about all the cards of one suit being together and in that particular suit order, then your probability increases to 120x 120x 120 out of 15 factorial.

IMHO, the best (I'm not so sure I will go so far as to say "only") way to satisfy the spectator(s) that the card is truly lost is to hand the deck to them to shuffle to their heart's content. If using a regular deck, this would necessitate either (1) _ a _ m _ n _ or (2) putting a c _ i _...

I really like the Sammy Davis Jr. conception of professionalism that was posted previously. On a related but different note with regard to the scope of one's ac...

Depression is real, and buying a new hat or card trick's not going to fix it.

But if you look at the link I posted above, you'll see that cognitive forms of therapy (i.e. reprogramming how you think about the world) has been shown at least as effective as anti-depressants for treatment.

Not [crap] at all. The ideas in Mark and Alfred's post were articulated by Mr. Shakespeare in Hamlet: "There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so." In the field of cognitive psychology, the theories of Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck have helped millions with depression. http://www...
