Re: Sam the Bellhop for kids?

You can do what Simon Lovell used to do--do the whole shuffled deck story impromptu for real. I saw him do it twice in a row.

By the way didn't he also have a story deck for children--Who Killed Lilly Longlegs or something like that?

Or is creating videos exposing to the "method = secret crowd" considered just another way of "performing magic?"

That sounds about right to me.

Re: Your Go to Trick or Routine

It might be a nice impromptu restaurant or coffee house trick if done with sugar packets, although the thickness and height of the piles might give it away or facilitate counting. (Or, perhaps artificial sweetener packets might be better than sugar, since they are thinner). Has anyone ever done it ...

Lots of iPad and screen/live performer synchronization magic going on today.

No idea if Copperfield's Portal actually uses camera trickery, but evidently the possibility is strong enough to kill the enjoyment for some.

Certainly Mark Wilson offered disclaimers about camera trickery, and Marc Salem offered $10000 to those who could prove the use of stooges in his show. And for some--but not all--of the public, those distinctions continue to be important for their enjoyment. From my perspective, what guys like Zach ...

David and John are Moscow Art Theater artistes compared to this stuff. Really, normally I would say the Oliver clip is a clever satire, but it's just the straight up reality of the show. Just awful inserts and phony scripted dialogue and contrived settings for the material. Why can't they just trust...

What do you do for a follow-up? Good point. Running out of "A" material before the finale afflicts many of the magicians on these contest shows. Watch the Derek Hughes interview in the most recent Reel Magic to hear his counter-intuitive solution to the problem...a really great interview ...

I don't agree that in Tsai's case non-magicians are led to the method. I am not even convinced that magicians know the full method. But even that example misses the point. I think Max Maven once said, perhaps with tongue in cheek, that even though the English word is pronounced ek-wi-voke, when using it in the conjuring sense, wouldn't it be nice to reserve the fake French pronunciation for the magical meaning.

If you want that exact order then of course 1 out of 15 factorial.

But if you don't care about the order within the suits, but do care about all the cards of one suit being together and in that particular suit order, then your probability increases to 120x 120x 120 out of 15 factorial.

IMHO, the best (I'm not so sure I will go so far as to say "only") way to satisfy the spectator(s) that the card is truly lost is to hand the deck to them to shuffle to their heart's content. If using a regular deck, this would necessitate either (1) _ a _ m _ n _ or (2) putting a c _ i _...
