Re: Excusing bad writing?

Minch and Kaufman are remarkable not only for their clear writing about their own magic, but their ability to describe other people's effects. That's a whole other animal. For those who describe their own magic, Simon Aronson is very high on my list as a model of clear, thoughtful explanation and in...

Re: Daryl's Death at The Magic Castle

Depression is real, and buying a new hat or card trick's not going to fix it.

But if you look at the link I posted above, you'll see that cognitive forms of therapy (i.e. reprogramming how you think about the world) has been shown at least as effective as anti-depressants for treatment.

Not [crap] at all. The ideas in Mark and Alfred's post were articulated by Mr. Shakespeare in Hamlet: "There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so." In the field of cognitive psychology, the theories of Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck have helped millions with depression. http://www...

Re: Philosophical debate for Mark and other pensive folk

I suspect the poster is asking whether a gambling demo is as effective for an audience as a sawing in half illusion. The simple answer is: it depends. Depends on the audience's taste and performer's skill. And a singer or juggler might impress them even more. A side issue was brought up about whethe...

Re: Daryl's Death at The Magic Castle

Entertainers are prone to depression, nervous ailments and even suicide because they see their childhood dreams of stardom fading. Sometimes they make money and sometimes they don't. It is a feast or famine way of life and to many people the lack of stability adds to the strain. If it were any othe...

Re: Intellectual Property Question

As said above, lots of different answers, and it depends. To take one interesting example: for a number of years, theater directors would "workshop" an idea for a future show. Actors would improvise on a theme, while a "writer" would pick out and transcribe the good stuff. But of...

Brad just curious. Is that true for you through all age groups? My experience has been that as many girls a...

I thought Dani DaOrtiz's comments on spectators in his recent At the Table lecture were really interesting.

He says he *creates* the spectators. If you don't understand what he means by that, it's worth looking at the lecture.
