Re: Most Influential Card Magician of 20th Century

I'd vote for Marlo, simply by volume of material (and a large percentage of it is good stuff, for sure). But Roy Walton should probably be on the list, as should Alex Elmsley. They have both contributed huge numbers of plots and ideas which have entered into wide circulation.

Re: Cannibal Cards bibliography: request for help

A quick update. This idea isn't dead, but it has been sleeping quite heavily. Lots of other things got in the way. But it's coming back to the top of the list. It may end up as an ebook rather than a printed book, however. Will keep everyone posted.

Richard's description of Blackpool as a bleak and cold pisshole is very unfair. During the summer it is a bleak and sometimes warm pisshole.

Re: Alaskan Poker by Ricky Jay

Still - it is deeper than that. Since magic is not a display of skill. But an attempt to fool people. And when you are successfully fooled - you are at a complete loss as to what the explanation could be. As a sideline, one thing I find interesting is how much card magic has changed in the last 30 ...

Most of what we consider outright "theft" occurs at the hobbyist level... a level often so deficient in skill that the their material would be unrecognizable when well executed. Fortunately, only friends and family are typically subject to this "singing in the shower." That's la...

Re: Alaskan Poker by Ricky Jay

Looking at the Ammar performance again, the Triumph bit of the kicker does get a bit lost in the Ace/flush production, it almost doesn't need to be there. I think this was always my doubt about the routine. Having said that, the kicker plays stronger in his hands than it read to me on the page, for ...

Re: Alaskan Poker by Ricky Jay

I suspect it's virtually impossible to combine Triumph and riffle stacking in a way which is original. Both elements have many well-documented methods, and the likelihood is any method will simply be a mash-up of what's already in print somewhere. Even if the specific use of this Triumph with that r...

Re: reading vs video

In Thee Olden Dayes of Yore (1980s) I rarely got to see any of my heroes actually perform, unless they lectured in London. I remember seeing the Marlo video in 1982 and being ridiculously excited to finally get a chance to see him work, to hear him speak. The only person I knew who had a video playe...

Re: Alaskan Poker by Ricky Jay

Leaving aside presentational questions, there are so many possible ways to do this effect - combine Triumph with some stacking - that it seems unnecessary to want to reproduce somebody else's method. Better to find your own handling. Although I agree with Richard it's not that strong an effect. Rick...

Re: Dancing Cane - a new design

Exactly right. Even when the cane or the card productions are done flawlessly, or with presentations which attempt to do something new with them, the basic problem is that these are no longer magic effects, because absolutely everybody can tell how they are done. When I first got into magic over 40 ...

I bought my original 1967 copy of Elmsley's 4 Card Trick ms. from Davenport's in about 1977.
