"Magnetic Mental Control" was marketed by Ralph W. Hull in the mid-30's. I'm guessing that Vernon and Horowitz improved on this in some way, though I don't know any details. From the advertisements, it sounds like Vernon worked it out so the two decks could be handled/shuffled by spectator...
