Re: Some thoughts on the Hooked Coin

I had a key with the same gimmick when I was a very young magician, bought from the Douglas catalogue. I believe the instructions were to attach it to the back of one hand while showing the palms empty and slip it into one hand while turning the hands over to show the backs. I never thought of attac...

 Okay, I was sort of right. There is a trick on Page 7 of 50 Tricks with a Thumb Tip by Melbourne Christopher titled "Living or Dead" and a following trick titled "Cards Controlled." The magician is told to prepare a thumb tip by tapping the inside with a nail.

I seem to recall that there was at one time a thumb tip available that performed the same function. I have not seen anything like that in a while. I could be wrong. Getting old, you know. TT's were made from metal when I was younger.

Amusing that they chose the name "Elmsley" as the pseudonym of the book's author.

Re: Penny punch

Mr. Riser, after reading your last post here I am thinking that I have misperceived the purpose of the penny punch. I was under the impression that the device was to be used "on the fly" so to speak, or in other words used in performance to surreptitiously mark a card, possibly from a borr...

Are coin purses more common in Europe? (I think John Bannon published some routines using these: https://www.marcopoloni.com/TACCO-italian-leather-coin-purse.htm Lance Pierce also has an outstanding routine using one as well.) I would not doubt that someone somewhere uses a form of coin purse, but ...

Of all the items a magician might use as a prop, I believe the coin purse is probably the most obsolete (anachronous?). I have seen wallets with a coin pocket, but not lately. The closest thing to a coin purse I have ever seen anyone carry was one of those soft plastic, oval-shaped things with a sli...

Daryl was indeed a master of the craft. He was the main act at one our local assembly's banquets a couple of years ago. It was amazing to watch him entertain the entire audience, magicians and non-magicians alike, for more than 30 minutes with just a few pieces of rope. Many of the effects were righ...

I am not an expert in the field, but it is my opinion that judging which books will be collectible or gain in value over the years is a difficult task. It is disappointing to see that a book I bought for say, $80.00, is going on eBay or Abebooks for $30.00. I recommend buying books that interest the...

Not to cloud the issue, but Hocus Pocus magic supply also lists this book as available, same price. I would call before ordering if you go this route, as they sometimes take a day or two to remove listings for out of stock items.

This shows up frequently in Bicycle cards bought in a brick from Costco and Sam's Club. Definitely not something new, as I noticed this discrepancy in some decks more than fifty years ago when I first started to learn card magic. Not quite as far back as the 1800's, but close enough.

I made it to Soapy Smith Night at the Castle for the fourth year in a row and had a really great time, as usual. Many of the party-goers were in 1890's period costumes, adding to the ambience of the event, which is essentially a raucous gambling night (with "Soapy dollars," not legal tende...

Anyone who would use a speech at a magic convention to attack a fellow magician and prominent publisher in the field, and later bans that person from attending future conventions needs to be sacked. Why did it take so long? If he was not actually fired, he should have been.
