This specialist (all he does is root canals) uses blue dental dam. You can't use it for the trick because it leaves a bluish shadow over the coin.

When Greater Magic was originally publisher, Carl Jones wanted to show it off to his laymen friends, but without exposing any magic. You don't need a bottle, cork, or anything else to set the coin up. Balance the coin on your second or third fingertip and stretch the damn out with the thumbs and fingers of both hands. Your finger pushes the coin upward. That's how I've done it for 50 years.
