Houdini's secret straitjacket escape

Today marks the 91st anniversary of Houdini's death on Halloween 1926. But instead of my usual post about his death, this year I thought I'd offer up a remarkable new story from his LIFE. Enjoy: The untold story of Houdini's secret straitjacket escape http://www.wildabouthoudini.com/2017/10/the-unto...

Haven't we seen all those photos a million times already? There's actually one in there I've never seen (HH looking down at his legions), and the shot of Houdini ship side with members of the AWS (Associated Wizards of the South) is a brand new one. Sold on eBay a while back. I guess it was Derek w...

I couldn't find a thread on this, so for those who might not know, Houdini's famous New York brownstone is for sale. http://www.wildabouthoudini.com/2017/06/278-is-for-sale.html I spent 3 hours inside the house yesterday and it was an incredible experience. Houdini in 1917

As is my New Year's Day tradition, I've posted a detailed look back at what Houdini was doing 100 years ago. 1917 is tricky. It's not a year that instantly offers up anything obvious. Is it possible there was a year in Houdini's life that isn't interesting? But in doing this, I've come to find 1917 ...

I guarantee a message from Houdini on Halloween

This is something I've held back for a special occasion, and what could be more special than the 90th anniversary of Houdini's death! Some of you may know the story of the message code arranged between Houdini and magician William J. Hilliar. Today on my blog I tell the backstory of the code (linked...

Today on my blog I've shared the story of an 1883 Bible signed by both Houdini's father and Houdini (as "Ehrich Weiss") which has been in the family of musician Tara O'Grady since the late 1970s. The story of how it came to be in her family is pretty wild stuff. It's never been off the she...

Re: Houdini and Doyle TV show in Canada

The early scene with Houdini in the Chinese Water Torture Cell was very well done. Capturing the audience nearly in hysterics, which has always been missed with other Houdini productions, was a big plus. And it didn't end with Houdini revealed to be his own axe-wielding assistant, which was a relie...

Re: History.com on Houdini

Houdini might have had an insufferable personality at times, but the public doesn't seem to mind a celebrity, whether it be an actor, sports star, or rock star, who shows ego, competitiveness and ambition. That's not a shock to anyone. The 1998 TNT Houdini biopic showed (and exaggerated) Houdini's c...

Re: History.com on Houdini

Of course, with the Adrien Brody biopic and the awful Brad Meltzer Decoded Houdini episode (which suggested Bess murdered Houdini because he suppressed her own career), HISTORY is more responsible than anyone for spreading untruths and garbage about Houdini. Makes this article a little ironic. But, ...

Houdini in 1916

My tradition is to kick off the new year by taking a look back at what Houdini was up to 100 years ago. We are so accustomed to the story of Houdini's life as a whole that focusing on a single year can be somewhat revelatory. So what was 1916 all about for HH? Well, he took his first tour of Texas, ...

It was 100 years ago this week that Houdini and Hardeen both opened in Oakland, California.
