Houdini in 1917

As is my New Year's Day tradition, I've posted a detailed look back at what Houdini was doing 100 years ago. 1917 is tricky. It's not a year that instantly offers up anything obvious. Is it possible there was a year in Houdini's life that isn't interesting? But in doing this, I've come to find 1917 ...

I guarantee a message from Houdini on Halloween

This is something I've held back for a special occasion, and what could be more special than the 90th anniversary of Houdini's death! Some of you may know the story of the message code arranged between Houdini and magician William J. Hilliar. Today on my blog I tell the backstory of the code (linked...

UPDATE: I've reworked the story here. Dorothy and Dick say their intent is to just sell the one poster, not all 14 over time, which was the info I had. Apologies.

The money raised will go toward repairs and upgrades to the museum. The first poster to be offered will be Episode 3 (&qu...

Secret recordings of Ed Saint

Today I have something pretty interesting on my blog. In 1966, John Booth discussed the existence of private phone conversations recorded by Ed Saint and when he and Bess Houdini lived in Hollywood. Well, thanks to the great Mark Willoughby, today I'm able to share excerpts and a short clip from two...

Hey everyone. I've been working hard for the past few days giving my Houdini blog a redesign. I think I have a formate now that offers a little more navigation to all the info buried within. I've relaunched with a post on "Houdini in 1899." My plan is do "deep dives" like this fo...

The Magic of Houdini with Alan Davies is now available to stream on Netflix. The documentary was produced in 2014 for ITV in the UK. It's never been released on DVD and this is its first availability in the U.S. In this doc, Alan Davies, a UK comedian and personality, travels to various Houdini loc...

Today on my blog I've shared the story of an 1883 Bible signed by both Houdini's father and Houdini (as "Ehrich Weiss") which has been in the family of musician Tara O'Grady since the late 1970s. The story of how it came to be in her family is pretty wild stuff. It's never been off the she...

Houdini & the Siberian Transport Cell

This week I dug into the story of Houdini's escape from the Siberian Transport Cell in Moscow in 1903. It's a fascinating escape steeped in mythology about how it played out and how Houdini might have escaped. Two parter. Enjoy. Re: Houdini and Doyle TV show in Canada

The early scene with Houdini in the Chinese Water Torture Cell was very well done. Capturing the audience nearly in hysterics, which has always been missed with other Houdini productions, was a big plus. And it didn't end with Houdini revealed to be his own axe-wielding assistant, which was a relie...

But the good news is it comes out on DVD in the UK on May 23: http://amzn.to/1ruNVW6 I've seen seven episodes so far and I'm enjoying them. Re: History.com on Houdini

Houdini might have had an insufferable personality at times, but the public doesn't seem to mind a celebrity, whether it be an actor, sports star, or rock star, who shows ego, competitiveness and ambition. That's not a shock to anyone. The 1998 TNT Houdini biopic showed (and exaggerated) Houdini's c...

Re: History.com on Houdini

Of course, with the Adrien Brody biopic and the awful Brad Meltzer Decoded Houdini episode (which suggested Bess murdered Houdini because he suppressed her own career), HISTORY is more responsible than anyone for spreading untruths and garbage about Houdini. Makes this article a little ironic. But, ...

Houdini in 1916

My tradition is to kick off the new year by taking a look back at what Houdini was up to 100 years ago. We are so accustomed to the story of Houdini's life as a whole that focusing on a single year can be somewhat revelatory. So what was 1916 all about for HH? Well, he took his first tour of Texas, ...

It was 100 years ago this week that Houdini and Hardeen both opened in Oakland, California.
