Re: DelGaudio Shuffle

The Delgaudio Shuffle is a lot different from the Heinstein Shuffle. It looks (based on video clips only) to be almost identical to the Grey shuffle. I also didn't feel that the shuffle was that difficult, at least comparatively. It will take some work to get it smooth, but it so far it seems a lot ...

Re: Steve Forte indicted!

Gents, I feel discussing Forte's current situation is severely lacking in taste, and agreeing with me isn't at all mandatory.....so no need to dice my posts to try and address it. Perhaps I should have been more precise though. There isn't a card guy here qualified to shine Forte's shoes.....not a ...

Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

Maybe this will help clarify. Assume you have a two card packet consisting of an ace and a 2. These two cards are shuffled. If a spectator is told to name a card (ace or 2), then a number/position (1 or 2), there are 4 potential ways this could go: 1 - ace at position 1 2 - ace at position 2 3 - tw...

Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

Jim, each deck has 52 combinations, so 52 decks of 52 combinations = 2704 total combinations. Another way to convince yourself is to actually perform several times the effect with a deck of 2 cards. According to your theory success will occur approx. 1/4 of the times. In reality you will instead ge...

Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

I think that this is proven by the well known example of how to accomplish this effect - with 52 stacked decks, each of which has 52 possibilities. This is actually proof that the odds ARE 1 in 52. When a card and a number are named, only 1 of those 52 decks will match. -Jim Jim, each deck has 52 c...

Old puzzle for the statisticians

I know this isn't magic, but because of the ACAAN posting that's digging into probabilities, here's a little puzzle for you. Some of you may have heard this problem posed before (it was famous years ago): Like the old "Let's Make a Deal", a game show contains 3 doors, designated A, B, and ...

Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

If you knew what card they were going to choose, the odds would be 1 in 52 that they would get the right number. So let's say for sake of argument they are going to choose the AS. You place it in the deck at number 20. Your odds are 1 in 52 of them choosing 20. However, let's just say you defy the ...

He did not touch the deck either time I did the effect. He did not use any psychology to get me to think of a particular card. It's as close to real magic as I've seen with a deck of cards short of the Hooker Card Rise and some other well-known things. Richard - thanks for playing along. I don't re...

Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

If you were only tracking one individual card, then the odds would be 1 in 52 - shuffle the deck and check where the AS is, for example. Statistically, you would have to shuffle around 52 times to have it show up in any particular spot. To throw in the odds of any named card being in that spot make...

Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

So, Berglas does not use stooges, he does not use pre-show work, he only uses one deck, the deck is in view from the get-go. Based on this information, he either has to touch the deck at some point, or psychologically gets you to name a particular card / number. Or it's real magic. Those are the opt...

Re: Berglas Effect .... WOW...

The effect as shown is impossible (actually, it has a chance of happening 1 in 2704 tries). Actually, there's a 1 in 52 chance of the named card being at the named number. And by allowing one-off variations and counting from either end of the deck, it goes down to 1 in 13. One way to improve the od...

The deck was out in the open when he did it for me, though I had not been told where to look at the time. The effect as shown is impossible (actually, it has a chance of happening 1 in 2704 tries). Therefore, the posts above are correct - either a stooge was used, or pre-show work. Tom Stone has a very well thought out possibility. The first video Pete linked to stated the conditions of the Berglas effe...

Re: Mysterious book

Two thoughts: Jonathan - I don't understand your criticism of desiring to keep secrets. Magic is an art based on secrets. If the effects we perform don't have a secret behind how they're accomplished, there is no illusion of magic. Therefore, the more people there are that know the secret, the fewer...

I don't understand your emphasis on the restrictions for performing this effect. All it really is is a card to impossible location. There's many different ways of accomplishing this effect. If performed well, the audience (magicians or otherwise) won't know or care what the method is. A great exampl...

My two cents on Color Monte: 1 - I rarely perform it anymore. I guess I look at it as more of a beginner trick, one that you start out using all the time, but then as your ability and knowledge progresses, you eventually move on to other things. This is how I used it - it was the first trick I ever ...

Anything that looks like a "prop". If it looks as if the magic is in the prop, then I don't do it. As an example, I've always been intrigued by tricks such as the needle through matchbox / brass block, but in a puzzle sort of way. When you do that trick, the audience doesn't think that you...

Card to forehead

Here's a question for y'all. There's some really cool routines out there that use the card to forehead as a kicker, or as misdirection for something else. I considered using the card to forehead in the past, but was talked out of it by my wife. The reason: How does the card stick there? Her thought ...
