After a quick search I found Fred Kaps' Hamman Count Overhand Shuffle in 52 Lovers. I feel like I saw it somewhere else before 52 Lovers was published.

In Volume 1 Number 5 of Talisman is Roger Rittner's "The New Wind-Up Deck". In the description he states that he can't remember who originally showed it to him but has found few people who had heard about it. That issue is dated April 3, 1970.

I just read about how this was originally done with a watchwinder gimmick and this person had made it easier by using the riffle.

Now I just need to remember where I read it. Will find it when I get home and post an update.

This sounds similar in concept to a coin routine Tim Glancey had. He said the coin was invisible on one side. It was a spellbound type routine but he switched the coin for nothing while pretending to turn the coin over and mimed holding the invisible coin.

The "version" in the Kenner book is Michael Weber's. If you read the introduction to the trick you will get the gist of what went on. Michael performed this, but did not explain it, at an 8 hour lecture he gave in Niagara on the Lake in the early 80's. It was not in print at that time but ...

The "Too Perfect" theory is incorrectly named and that is the reason for the big debate. If a trick were truly perfect all explainations, including the correct one, would be impossible in the audiences mind. Rick Johnsson's theory should be called the "Not Quite Perfect" theory.
