Re: Mulholland's CIA Manual

The CIA provided me with both full documents in 2003. There seemed no reason to publish the complete "Some Operational Applications of the Art of Deception" once Richard had published the vast majority of the text from the Christopher collection version. The "Recognition Signals"...

Re: 2009 Los Angeles Conference on Magic History

Was there a featured reproduction of a classic illusion this year? The Eidophuikon, Robert-Houdin's Miraculous Orange Tree, Devant's disappearing lady "Beau Brocade"; the Houdini/Morritt vanishing lady "Goodbye Winter," Paul Valadon's vanishing lady "Well, I'm...!" and...

Re: Mulholland's CIA Manual

I thought of you when we were chatting because we discussed the fact that they had all of the illustrations redone because they were so poor in the copy of the original which was available. I'll be interested to hear how they stand up to comparison from someone who has both. The CIA provided me the...

Re: Mulholland's CIA Manual

I find the claim that Keith Melton & Robert Wallace "discovered" the manual in 2007 a bit bizarre. As has been noted, years of research and a number of Freedom of Information Act requests yielded a heavily redacted version of Mulholland's work a decade ago...and it -- along with scores...

Re: Which Issue?

Thank you, Joe. This is very helpful. In the past, when I sent my Genii's off the the binder at the end of year, I would just have a pocket placed in the front and/or rear to hold such freebies. Paper supplements were simply bound-in. For this year's volume, I'm having pages with pockets inserted be...

Re: Remembering Doug.

The DVD is indeed different in many respects than the Broadway production -- not just cast, but its effects and songs as well (you can read a rather lengthy review and comparison in the October 2001 issue of Genii). But as I noted in that article, while we can't go back to 1974 again, it's nice to b...

Re: How do you store your Genii?

I have a complete file of Genii. At the end of each year, I have that year's volume bound in black buckram...and have pockets/sleeves added to the inside covers to hold any inserts/ephemera/cds etc that might have accompanied any of those 12 issues. By the way, I use Wert Bookbinding in Allentown, P...

Re: Help Identify This Quotation

For some reason, this inquiry reminded me of a passage from W. Somerset Maugham's Mr. Know All:

"Do you like card tricks?"

"No, I hate card tricks," I answered.

"Well, I`ll just show you this one."

He showed me three.

You should know that the cards never appear to waver, tilt or shimmy on their ascent or descent under the dome...as might be expected if they were being raised by a thread.

Keep in mind that the bear's head levitates as well under a separate glass dome.

It was a wonderful experience...not because it had not been seen in over a decade, not because it is unlikely to be seen again, and not because it mystified some of the finest thinkers in magic today.
