Re: Eugene Burger Has Died at 78

Years ago Eugene presented a lecture at The Mansions Hotel in San Francisco. One of the topics covered in the lecture was Equivoque. Eugene first demonstrated it using an attendee as the spectator. Then he explained it in some detail. Then he showed it again now that we supposedly knew how it worked...

Re: Jeff Busby Passes Away

The price of the Bertram cups went way up due to an eBay auction where 3 people decided they wanted Bertram cups a number of years ago. That auction closed at something like $2200. Pete Biro put his up and got $1500, so figuring there were 3 people I put my set up for $1700 and they were gone in an...

Re: Jeff Busby Passes Away

Now, the Chief Genii did own a set of brass Busby cups back then and believed them to be smaller that the original Danny Dew cups because the final load ball that fit comfortably in his PF/DD cup would not fill well inside the Busby cup. This topic triggered me to go try something out with three se...

Re: Magicians Documentary

I remembered when Burt Wonderstone was released and magicians exploded. As an amateur ballet dancer I saw the same reaction with Black Swan. All my friends got offended by the movie. I think I was the only one that liked it. I just watched Burt Wonderstone on DVD and loved it. It's sort of the magi...

Re: Daryl's Death at The Magic Castle

We have already stated the facts here: 1. Daryl was fully dressed. 2. He did not die in a closet, but in the curtained area behind the performance area of the Parlour. 3. He committed suicide, it was not an accident. Richard, there's more to the message than merely those 3 things. I suggested that ...

Re: 347: Bob Kohler - The Man Behind the Magic

As mentioned, Bob was good friends (and for a short time, business partners) with Daryl. He will be missed by the entire international magic community. But I received a note from Phoenix, AZ magician, Jerry Ferguson, who recently spoke with Daryl's widow, Alison. I received the text of his conversa...

Re: Magicians Documentary

The magicians selected for the film, and the versions of their lives shown in the film, are all choices made by the film maker. The film has that "lonely loser" tone because that's what the film makers chose to portray. They can claim otherwise, but I don't buy it. The fact that no tag li...

Re: Magicians Documentary

One of the things that became apparent to me after watching this film in a venue filled with mostly non-magicians, and listening to the questions posed to the filmmakers afterward, is that (as Marcie Hume said to me during one of our interviews) the laity and magicians do not receive this film the ...

Access questions about digital vers. of Genii

I'm thinking of subscribing to the digital version so I can read it on my PC (not a Mac, not an iPad.) On the front page there's reference to downloading a demo, but I've looked around including searching the Forums and can't find any other reference to it. So, is there a downloadable demo? Is there...

The first is "Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay", and the second is "Tim's Vemeer" -- both of which I've seen, and Jonathan (perceptive as always) is correct in his assessments. But I don't know what he is talking about with respect to the third one, and...

One of those days (mentalism books)

Late last night I was surfing ebay and suddenly two Bob Cassidy books popped up; The Art of Mentalism and The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy, both on Buy It Now for about cover price. I didn't have either and wanted both so I rushed to buy them. *POW* someone beat me to the punch on Artful Mentalis...

I've always loved Supreme Magic. As an adult I still find their tricks for kid shows to be fascinating to look at, due to the art. Back in the day I'm pretty sure I was ordering silk magic from them. It was expensive due to the pound vs. dollar, but they used high quality silks.

Re: Magicians Documentary

I just watched it on Netflix, and as a pure film it's very well done. As a lifelong student of magic, I was quite taken by the highly personal look at each magician profiled, and I watched the entire movie without interruption or conversation. However on a personal level as it would relate to the v...

Re: Buying magic now, vs. then.

I'll take a good magic book any day. If I can get something as a book AND as a DVD, I'll take both. But if I can only have one, I still like a good book - especially over videos and downloads of magic at crotch-level. Now that I think about it...stuff published in books is perhaps slightly safer fr...

They do it this way now because they can. There wasn't much recorded (video) magic instruction for sale prior to the home VCR that I'm aware of (did anyone ever sell magic instruction on 8mm film or such? Certainly couldn't have been too widespread a practice if they did.) What used to be a serious...

Buying magic now, vs. then.

I ran across this older post (2005) by Eugene Burger http://www.magicbeard.com/presentations-essays/the-sad-death-of-the-magic-shop.php and it raised both nostalgia and a question in my mind. The link above discusses how magic was sold, and more importantly, how magic training was transferred, in th...

You are in a thick, heavy fog. Stay in bed. Pull the covers over your head. Don't want to hear words of encouragement. Especially from those you love. No one understands. Nothing brings pleasure. Robbed of things you once loved to do. Hopeless and overwhelmed. Things won't change. You just want the...
